![Speech by Kneecap’s legal representative after plea hearing
Darragh Mackin is a director at Phoenix Law (human rights law specialists). He spoke outside Westminster Magistrates Court yesterday morning after the plea hearing for Irish rapper Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh [aka Mo Chara], charged with an offence under Terrorism legislation over an incident which took place when his band Kneecap performed in North London in November last year.
The band have assembled a formidable defence team including Gareth Peirce (who overturned the wrongful convictions of the ‘Birmingham Six’ and ‘Guildford Four’), and Blinne Ní Ghrálaigh who recently represented South Africa in their ICJ case against Israel.
A court hearing on 20th August will hear further legal arguments, after the defence questioned the jurisdiction of the court and the prosecution’s laying of charges just outside of a six-month time limit.
After Darragh Mackin’s speech, band member Naoise Ó Cairealláin told the hundreds of supporters that Kneecap would be playing Glastonbury next Saturday at 4pm, and then led a chant of ‘Free Palestine’ before leaving.
