Who is Tyler Durden?
Tyler Durden set out on a mission to dismantle social conditioning, combat consumerism, and upend the existing social order. His beliefs appear to incorporate aspects of Buddhism, esoteric spirituality, anarcho-primitivism, and Neo-Luddism, with a strong anti-consumerism theme running through them. He frequently expressed his disapproval of modern society as a whole, popular culture, materialism, capitalism, most technology, and other aspects of it. Tyler envisioned a utopian setting where people could live in peace amidst the ruins of a post-apocalyptic city...
Some detractors contend that Tyler Durden was a hypocrite for advocating for freedom while running his own personal cult. They cite Project Mayhem members' obedient behavior to Tyler's orders and their apparent lack of individuality as evidence for their claim. However, Project Mayhem's aim, according to Chuck Palahniuk, "was to coach people beyond their own idea of their abilities. People had to be directed past their own fears. The group would eventually disband, leaving behind fully formed former members. The narrative, however, ended before it would have come to this.
In Fight Club 2, it is made clear that Tyler may be some kind of inherited mental disorder that has been dormant in the family of the narrator for generations, waiting to be fully realized and attempt to overthrow the existing world order and establish a new one, in a manner akin to an Old Testament Biblical purge. Given that Tyler also seems to exist in the Narrator's son's mind, it's possible that this is just a lie that Tyler is telling to get the Narrator to give up his free will to him. Additionally, Fight Club 2 is practically a self-aware parody of the Fight Club series, so this might just be a joke...
