James Gurney visits a mosquito-infested swamp to paint skunk cabbage. He first primes the watercolor paper with an abstract priming color in casein. Using a large flat brush he cuts in the dark background shapes to define the leaves. Finally he switches to small round and rigger brushes to paint the veins on the leaves. Gurney washes the mud off his painting companion Smooth and cleans up his brushes.
