Breaking old habits of painting tight can be difficult. That is why one of my top tips is to do many preparation studies. In this video, I show you my favorite approach. Doing a painting sketch using a small format size but larger brushes and lots of paint. You will see how the scene's strength comes from big shapes like the dark mass shape, and then the lights look really special.
