Painting in only two values - in this case the value of light and the value of shadow - gives you lots of practice in making good shapes for your paintings. Shapes are one of the main building blocks of painting design, and it takes lots of practice to get good at making them. I usually paint buildings for this type of exercise because I find good shapes in them. I go in depth on this topic in the blog post linked below.
