The Painted Hills are located in a remote corner of eastern Oregon and offer a window into the distant past. Scenic trails like the Painted Cove and Carroll Rim showcase the area’s iconic, colorful hills. Sutton Mountain towers over the Painted Hills far below and offers sweeping views of the surrounding mountains. Camping opportunities include both dispersed camping on BLM land and a few developed spots along the John Day River, such as Shelton Wayside, Service Creek, and Priest Hole. Overall, this area offers a great mixture of desert solitude, fascinating geology, and riverside relaxation.
