This tutorial, a part of our "Flesh and Bone" 10-episode tutorial series, is an example of how to start painting flesh in a more grimdark style.
We start with Stynylrez Pale Sage primer, continuing with a layer of an enamel wash, Goon's Grime would be ideal for this colour scheme. Clean it off the raised areas with a dry Q-tip; don't use any mineral spirits. This will make sure that the enamel is not reactivated, leaving a slight filter over the entire flesh.
This will let us create a shading foundation that we can work oils into, blending them effortlessly, as with just a little movement, we create transitions between oils and enamels. Work with a very, very small amount of oil at a time, building the colour in several passes.
Then, some life to the flesh with a crimson acrylic wash sprayed from below as undershading. This will add volume and some colour, as well as shading to the larger form.
As the last step, apply bright, pure Abteilung 502 Dead Flesh highlights (Abt. 502 Buff works too), and finish up with shading recesses and only recesses with Agrax Earthshade. Make sure to feather the oils with just water so you have smooth transitions.
And that's it! You could add more after this, but this is a nice and simple flesh to learn.
