Maryland lawmakers are considering legislation that would protect unborn children once a fetal heartbeat is detected.
Pacific Justice Institute (PJI) is voicing its support for House Bill 49 — commonly known as Maryland’s “Heartbeat Bill” — currently pending before the Maryland General Assembly.
House Bill 49 would:
Require physicians to test for a fetal heartbeat before performing an abortion
Prohibit the procedure if cardiac activity is detected
Recognize the state’s compelling interest in protecting human life
Supporters of the bill note that detectable cardiac activity — typically around six weeks gestation — marks a significant biological milestone.
The legislation comes in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, which returned authority to regulate abortion policy to the states under principles of federalism.
