The Pacific is on the front lines of the climate crisis, where rising costs, unreliable energy, and climate impacts make daily life harder. With funding from the Government of Japan and implemented by UNDP, the Pacific Green Transformation Project Pacific GX is helping countries move toward a sustainable, inclusive, low carbon future.
Each country designed solutions for its own needs: expanding renewable energy in Papua New Guinea, advancing green land and maritime transport in Samoa, bringing solar power to homes, schools, and health facilities in Timor Leste, and delivering community run pico hydro systems in Vanuatu. A regional component strengthened knowledge sharing and coordination across the Pacific.
An independent evaluation found Pacific GX made a real difference for remote communities, women, youth, and essential services. From hospitals with reliable power in PNG, to EV training in Samoa, solar powered health and education facilities in Timor Leste, and hydro powered villages in Vanuatu, the project built not only infrastructure but also trust, ownership, and a foundation for long term green growth.
Sustaining this progress now depends on local skills, stronger regional cooperation, and long-term government commitment, ensuring clean energy remains reliable, affordable, and accessible for generations to come.
