Jointer Size Doesnt Matter! Flatten Large Boards on a Smaller Jointer DIYTyler 2020-05-09 | Jointer Size Doesn't Matter! I have a ton of HEAVY hickory to flatten that is larger then my jointer, today I will show you a two step trick to Flatten Large Boards on a Smaller Jointer. I purchased an 8" jointer a while back and knew that it would not be large enough to handle all the different widths of wood that I would throw at the machine. But I believe your money will be better spent on a machine that you will often use 100% of the capacity and have a few tricks up your sleeve to still allow you to flatten larger slabs. Overhanging the board on the jointer will allow you to create a flat reference surface very easily. Then you can use your planer with a DIY jig on it to use that flat reference side to flatten the opposite side of your boards and you are off an running! Save tons of money on a smaller jointer but still have the capacity!You may have seen me talking a lot in the video even though you may not hear me and that is because I have been doing some building on livestream! I thought I grabbed a slab of hickory off my wood rack and got started to make a floating shelf. After I ran the wood over the first tool I was quick to discover that I was working with an Ash slab…no big deal it has a open grain like hickory so it will be a good test and is easier to work with!I specifically wanted to try and fill the wood grain with 3 coats of Aqua Coat and finish the wood with one coat of Rubio mono coat. This proved to be a successful finish but it was not faster as the 3 coats of Aqua coat take a while to apply and allow to finish. I will skip this in the future. Is a Mini-Split Ductless Air Conditioning and Heat Unit worth it? Thoughts after 4 Years in my Shop DIYTyler 2022-03-26 | I have had a mini-split air conditioner, heat pump in my shop for the last 4 years. Here are my thoughts, how it works, what I would do different if I was to buy a new one.I did not mention in the video how much it costs to run this mini-split. I never built anything before this! My First Woodworking Project as DIYTyler, Build a Toddler Bed! DIYTyler 2022-02-26 | A look back at how the first project I ever made as DIYTyler is holding up. Do we even have that project anymore, is it used? I build a few things before this project back in the day with my dad but no furniture. This was a build that was completed before I ever filmed anything for this YouTube channel. As our family started to grow we needed some more furniture and for the price that stores were asking for items that I knew would not hold up. I started to investigate if a toddler bed was something that I could build. "I just need this one tool and I will be able to make this!" Famous last words...look where we are now. So with a Kreg R3, a Sliding Kobalt Miter Saw, drill and sander I made this toddler bed for our eldest and we are still using it to this day, almost 9 years later. It is WAY overbuilt with 1x3 and 2x6s but it was the material I was able to work with at the time and, even though it's difficult to move around, the kids bed will last forever! Building a Composite Deck Part 2. Joist, Blocking and Stairs! In this second part of the composite deck build video we are really starting to see things take shape as we add the joist, properly hanger them and level them out to make sure our Armadillo Composite decking does not have any wavy areas. We also add a bunch of blocking so we can add a beautiful accent color picture framing all the way around the deck. Then we go into great detail to cut our own stringers and build the front steps with 12" centers so we can have proper composite porch stairs. Check out their products, including the marble kit we used: totalboat.comWe started with a double layer of 3/4" MDF that we laminated together to get a thick, stable counter top. We then primed with white primer, poured a seal coat of tinted white epoxy and let that cure. Then followed up with another thicker layer of white epoxy and added black fissure lines by hand using some black tinted epoxy, after the resin had set up enough to be stable but not flow off the counter we removed the tap from the edges so that the white and black epoxy would spill over the edge.We cleaned up the drip marks, flipped the counter over and poured a seal coat of epoxy on the bottom of the counter. Once the bottom throughouly cured we flipped the counter back over to pour a clear layer of epoxy on the top of the counter to seal the entire piece,Add the faucets and install! Looks great and has been holding up perfectly for about 5 weeks so far now.Is epoxy easier, or cheaper than laminate, no but you can make things you cannot by and while the process is a lot of steps it is not difficult and pretty fun!
