Learning to draw - Week 4 - Finishing My Sea-Themed Fantasy Book Illustration Katia Kot 2025-09-27 | This video is part of week 4 of my Learning to Draw series, where I continue working on a fantasy book illustration in Procreate 5.4. The video is a time-lapse with a voiceover, where I share my thoughts about the digital painting process and how I am approaching textures, shadows, and composition.The project shows my workflow as I add base colors, refine shapes, and redraw details such as the tentacle. I also talk about keeping consistent shadows with parallel light rays and my attempts to experiment with different surfaces. The focus is on practicing and learning, not on providing a Procreate tutorial.During the process, I explore drawing textures in Procreate, including trying wood, metal, and barnacles. While I don’t teach how to draw wood texture, how to draw metal texture, or how to draw barnacles, I share my own challenges and what I noticed while working with them. The video also includes experiments with Procreate brushes, such as the charcoal brush and mint brush from the Procreate 5.4 brushes set.This video represents my illustration workflow and how I am documenting my progress. In this video I’m sharing a speedpaint time-lapse of a bookmark I painted with Liquitex acrylic gouache and colored pencils. This was my first time trying this medium, and I wanted to show you how I approached it. The colors stay vibrant, the texture is beautiful, and when you add colored pencils on top, it creates such an interesting layered effect.The full tutorial is available on my Patreon in real time with narration. This week is all about occlusion shadows and cast shadows, and I take you through my process step by step as I apply these concepts to my marine-themed book design.I talk about what I learned from the lesson, how separating large and small occlusion shadows completely changed the way I think about shading, and why painting everything dark on multiply mode before lowering the opacity helped me place shadows more confidently. Learning to draw - Week 2 - Designing a Marine-Themed Book (Digital Art Time-Lapse) - Smirnov School Katia Kot 2025-09-15 | In this video I’m sharing my Week 2 process from the CGBASICS course, where I focus on designing a marine-themed fantasy book. This stage is all about creating the line work and exploring book design in perspective, while preparing for shadows and color in the next part.I walk through my design decisions step by step — from using a compass as the central element to adding supporting details like a scroll map, barnacles, gemstones, and an octopus tentacle. I also talk about the challenges I faced with perspective, how I redesigned the book when the first version didn’t work, and some useful tricks for placing objects in perspective digitally.One of the most important lessons this week was understanding design hierarchy: making sure the main element stands out while the secondary and tertiary elements support it. I share the feedback I got from my mentor, what I learned about balancing small, medium, and large shapes, and why I decided to rework the book design a second time.This project took a lot more time and effort than I expected, but I know the more I practice, the easier it will get. Learning to draw CG Basics - Week 1 - Smirnov School Katia Kot 2025-09-10 | In this video, I wanted to share what I’ve been working on during my first week of the CG Basics course at Smirnov School. It’s a program mainly focused on digital game art, but I’m applying the principles to illustration.The very first exercises were all about the fundamentals—like creating smooth gradients with a flat brush that isn’t soft, and learning how to color pick properly. Simple, but super useful.Then came the classic sphere exercise. We started in grayscale, learning to shape the form, and then moved into color. I also drew on some principles I’d picked up from Ben Eblen’s Greymatter course, especially his idea of light as additive—it really clicked for me here. Still, I found myself constantly adjusting to keep the sphere smooth and not lumpy.The main light source was treated as sunlight with parallel rays, which made the shading clearer. Moving into the color stage, I discovered how powerful layer modes can be. The teacher used Multiply for shadows, Screen and Add for highlights, plus some clever overpainting tricks at the end. Honestly, I usually don’t rely on layer modes that much, so this was eye-opening.I ended up making two spheres: one by following the tutorial exactly, and a second one where I experimented on my own. In the first version, there was a purple reflection in the shadow that I wasn’t a big fan of—because the floor leaned more toward bluish-red than pure purple. As an illustrator, you can always bend reality to make things look prettier, but I wanted to test it more realistically.After the spheres, we moved on to materials practice. I picked a few random references—like coffee, skin, and a zipper. With my mentor’s feedback, I refined them: adding more texture to the coffee, deepening the shadows on the skin, and bringing more detail into the zipper.That wraps up my first week in CG Basics! Day 10 – Learning Head Anatomy with 21 Draw (Rodgon) #21DRAW #AnatomyDrawing #LearnToDraw Katia Kot 2025-08-26 | Hey guys, it’s Day 10 of the anatomy course with Rodgon on 21 Draw. We’re almost halfway there! I’ve been battling a pretty bad tonsillitis, so today was tough. Still, I managed to grab about fifteen fever-free minutes to dedicate to the course, and I’m glad I did.For this lesson, I didn’t use any reference photos. Honestly, I feel like I don’t yet have enough knowledge to properly combine reference with the guidelines. Instead, today was all about learning the mapping system — the infinity sign and the water drop shapes. It’s amazing how such simple forms can turn something that looks so complicated into something very approachable.When you see a finished head drawing, it looks intimidating. But when you break it down step by step, the way Rodgon explains it, you realize just how simple it can be. And the best part? I actually drew my very first head in profile view that looks like a real head. I was genuinely shocked when I stepped back and saw it.So yeah, that’s Day 10. Tomorrow it’s on to Day 11. Day 9 with Draw21 & Rodgon #21draw #anatomy #drawingprocess Katia Kot 2025-08-25 | So, it’s Day 9 of the 21 Draw course with Rodgon, and today’s lesson was about drawing the head. Honestly, this is an exercise I should have done a long time ago, but I skipped ahead to more complicated things — which definitely didn’t make things easier.In this exercise, I was focusing on drawing the basic ball shape and then placing the facial features on top. I followed his suggestion of experimenting with different head shapes, and then tried them in different views — turning the heads in various directions to see if they still matched the original structure.After that, just like I did before, I grabbed some reference photos from Pinterest. From there, I tried to break the faces down into simple shapes and see if I could capture the placement of the eyes, the mouth, and how the ellipses of the head open up in perspective.The downside of this exercise is that you don’t really get feedback. But the upside is that I actually feel like I understand the structure better now. The instructions are easy to follow, and right now, when creating something original feels so overwhelming, this kind of practice really helps me keep going.So yeah, that was Day 9. Tomorrow is Day 10, and it looks like there’s going to be a lot more happening. Thanks for watching!

But on day seven, I can say the information is very well explained and structured, which is exactly what I need right now. I really like it, and he makes it so simple that even I got it (haha). I'm still struggling with 3D forms and anatomy, but I’d recommend this course for beginners.
