Did you know that you can actually grow wasabi and that it's a root? Hollyhock Gardener Dana shows us how to replant, grow, and harvest wasabi root (rhizome). Wasabi plants are native perennials, they grow best in high humidity conditions and do not like dry, hot weather which make them perfect for our garden on Cortes Island. For many, especially those who are white and/or privileged, processing the enormity of systemic racism can feel overwhelming and paralyzing. This workshop is focused on embodied experiences of whiteness, with tools for increasing resilience and capacity for discomfort in the project of dismantling white supremacy. These tools include sound, breath, and movement. This workshop will include a recorded session from Khari Wendell McClelland with music and writing exercises. Laura June Albert and Rebekka Goldsmith will lead movement and voice/singing exercises that can be used to increase resiliency and capacity as we each work towards unpacking and dismantling systemic racism within ourselves and our society.

Hollyhock Soil Recipe - 2 five-gallon buckets of 1 year old shifted compost - 1 five-gallon bucket of sifted peat moss - 1/4 cup of dolomite lime to neutralize ph - 1/2 five-gallon bucket of fine vermiculite (medium vermiculite would also work), wear a mask - Sprinkle water as needed and mix thoroughly
