Iced Eagle Rescue on Lake Michigan KenScottPhotography 2019-02-07 | Some know that in my ‘spare time’, I volunteer at the raptor rehabilitation center in Empire … Wings of Wonder(WoW) … By fortune or misfortune, an eagle that somehow had the inconvenience of coming into contact with Lake Michigan during the recent polar vortex was in trouble. Finders had been watching 4 eagles eating something out on the edge of the ice. Three of the eagles eventually flew away but the fourth remained, and it was immediately apparent that something was wrong. So, they(the finders) contacted Wings of Wonder where I was holding down the fort while the director, Rebecca Lessard was making her own Polar Vortex sidestep by visiting her grand baby in Dallas, TX! I called volunteer Chris Johnson to see if he had some time open for a possible adventure and he bit!The accompanying video is a spotty story of the rescue and rehabilitation as I was there to rescue/assist and not to photo’g, but I couldn’t resist getting some clips when the timing was right and my help was not needed. The first segment I was wading amongst ice chunks, trying to keep my footing, an eye on the eagle/Chris and get some video ... sorry for the 'bobblyness'.The eagle was sitting on the edge of an ice shelf about 100 feet from shore. I donned insulated chest waders, a PFD and slowly plodded out into the water amongst the large floating ice blocks to corral the eagle with hopes that he would move towards shore where Chris was waiting with blanket and thick handling gloves.We were able to keep him on the shoreline ice and convinced him to go ashore so we could gather him(and his 8?” ball of tail ice) to take back to WoW to assist in the defrosting process. It worked and the only close casualty was the newfound leak in my waders ... at crotch level(of course) … luckily Chris was right where he needed to be and had the presence of mind to intercept the guy who seemingly was looking for an assist at the same time we were offering one!Getting the eagle back to WoW, we set him up over night in a crate near a heat vent hoping the freezerlings would let loose, but alas, the big one did not ... so, the next morning, Jim Manley joined the crew to help with the next step of ‘forced defrostation’ ... warm tap water directly applied to the ice ball. They were able to remove the ice beast and it was apparent he was pretty happy to have his discharge chute operating again as he was making up for lost time … with cleared out piping he gently accepted his first free meal very gently from forceps.Sunday morning the eagle was moved to the outside 100 foot flight pen where he finished his full recovery. He is flying perfectly, preening and certainly enjoying his daily free meals of rabbit, rat and fish dinners.Wings of Wonder is inviting the public to his release on Sunday, Feb 10th, 2019 at 4pm, from the Suttons Bay High School parking lot, 500 South Elm Street, Suttons Bay. Adult Bald Eagle Release KenScottPhotography 2020-06-14 | "On May 31, 2020 this adult Bald Eagle had been feasting on some tasty form of road kill, with his mate, when he was hit by a vehicle near Manton, Michigan. Passersby, Steve and Carol Duncan, stopped and rescued the injured bird. They called the Michigan DNR and connected with Conservation Officer Rich Stowe, who met them and proceeded to transport the eagle to Wings of Wonder. Upon arriving at the center the Eagle was standing and alert. A quick exam showed no fractures so the Eagle was transferred to our 100 foot aviary. He immediately flew to the far end and joined the other 2 eagles in rehab. Over the next several days his posture displayed sore and stiff muscles, which was quite understandable after being hit by a speeding vehicle. He was truly a very lucky bird…the 7,000 feathers on his body helped to absorb most of the impact from the speeding vehicle, preventing any of his bones from fracturing. Over the next several days he rested and recovered, all the while enjoying those free daily meals of rabbit, quail, rat and fish meats. On June 5th, 2020 we brought him back near to the area where he was found and set him free. It was a hot and muggy day, so the air was rather heavy, which is why he didn’t take to the high skies when released. Instead he followed the contour of the land, receiving some lift from the hot air rising from the ground. He flew off with strength and purpose, quickly disappearing around a large ridge in the distance. Honor(MI) Eagle Capture, Rehab and Release KenScottPhotography 2020-06-01 | "This adult female bald eagle was rescued on April 13, 2020 just north of Honor, Michigan. Her rescue was rather adventuresome requiring a chase into a thick and dense swamp. The initial exam showed signs that this bird had been caught, and released, from a leg hold trap. Both of her feet were severely damaged. Equally sad was that she had a brood patch which meant she was either incubating eggs or brooding young chicks. For the first 24 hours she was given fluids, medications for pain, some fresh bites of fish and made comfortable in a deeply padded and cozy crate. We started her on Magna Wave (PEMF) treatments over the next 7 days. PEMF (pulsating electromagnetic frequencies) helps to increase the flow of oxygenated blood and circulation which speeds up the healing process. Since it is non painful and passive the raptor does not even know she is receiving this treatment. The PEMF pad is placed under the intensive care crate which delivers low, medium or high pulsating frequencies. We set up 40 minute treatments, three times per day. After each session she was moved into a clean crate and given fresh meat which she eagerly accepted. The eagle showed signs of improvements daily . . . the open wounds healed nicely and she began to get movement and sensation back in most of her toes. On day 8 she was moved to our 100 foot outside aviary where she could gain back her strength, fly, take a bath, move her feet and toes better and bask in the sunshine. She continued to enjoy, and expect, the free meals delivered daily.Nineteen days later, on May 2, 2020, she was released near the area where she had been found. She flew off strongly and with a sense of purpose . . . she knew she was home. Eagle Rescue/Rehab/Release ... Beaver Island KenScottPhotography 2020-04-18 | "This adult Bald Eagle was rescued and transported from Beaver Island, Michigan on February 29th, 2020. He was favoring his left wing and could not fly. At Wings of Wonder the eagle was given fluids, a medication for pain relief and made comfortable in our intensive care area of the clinic. He was seen by one of our participating veterinarians once he was stable enough. Radiographs were taken which showed there were no fractures. We could not find any superficial abrasions, cuts or scratches but his sore left wing made us suspect there had been some sort of collision injury. From intensive care he was moved to our large 100 foot aviary. He certainly enjoyed the extra freedom and began to test his wings a bit but was still very reluctant to fly. This video displays his first few attempts at flight over the next couple of weeks . . . some hops and jumps, then some short flights with rough landings and eventually perfect, strong and controlled flights the full length of the aviary. After more conditioning/strengthening was ready to return to the Island. Island Airways donated the flights for this eagle . . . both the flight from the island in February and again for the flight to return the eagle. The Corvid 19 statewide lock down caused some complications with the release plans. We knew we had to get this bird back out in the wild before the resident eagles became too territorial with nesting and pair bonding behaviors. One option was to release the bird in Charlevoix but that would require him to fly the 30 plus miles over Lake Michigan to get back to the Island. We felt it was not in his best interest to make that long flight right after he was released. Island Airways assured us that they were following all health codes, regulations and protocols. They offered to fly the eagle and support crew in a clean and sanitized airplane . . . we would be the only ones aboard besides our amazing pilot Paul Welkie. All of us, except the eagle, would wear masks. On April 11, 2020 we loaded everything up and were flown to Beaver Island. Once we landed on the grassy airstrip Paul taxied to a quiet area and the eagle was released. The eagle basically hopped out of my arms, got his bearings and flew off with grace, strength and purpose. Paul, Ken and I got back into the plane and flew to the mainland. The Covid 19 pandemic prevented all those who helped with this eagle’s capture, rescue and transport from being a part of his release. But we hope this video and our huge round of THANKS offers some gratification. Bald Eagle Release January 20, 2020 KenScottPhotography 2020-01-26 | Celebrating Rev. Martin Luther King: This bald eagle was rescued by MiDNR up near Vanderbilt, Michigan. An adult male, he was exhibiting tightly fisted feet. There appeared no other injuries. Colleague Jim Manly did the initial triage and intensive care for this bird as Rebecca was out of town when the call came in. Within just a few days the eagle was opening his feet and eating well. He was then brought to Wings of Wonder for continued rehabilitation and flight conditioning. As he became stronger and more healthy he was showing that he was not happy being in a captive environment. He was testing the strength of the flight pen walls...he needed to go free. So, today was his day . . . he flew with strength and purpose and headed north, in the direction he came from. Freedom once again. Lake Michigan and micro plastics KenScottPhotography 2020-01-09 | I was out on a shoreline hike and came across this site ... which appears to be a pretty good small plastics filtering system. It seems there is more and more plastic debris along the shoreline these days. I cannot clean the whole beach everytime I'm out and so had come to focus on balloons and balloon strings as they were so popular and easy to find. Fortunately, because of education and groups like 'balloonsblow.org', they are getting harder to find!Unfortunately, small pieces of plastic are getting easier to find in quantities that make them stand out along the shoreline. What I have not figured out is an easy, efficient way to collect the pieces for proper disposal. Bald Eagle Release x 2 KenScottPhotography 2019-10-20 | On this beautiful Oct 9, 2019 day, Wings of Wonder released two immature Bald Eagles. These youngsters were admitted to the center 5 weeks prior and both were in fairly rough shape. The little male was emaciated and extremely dehydrated, the larger female was also thin and it appeared that she had been hit by a vehicle. Both birds responded to treatment and within several days, of being admitted, were stretching their wings in our large 100 foot aviary. They gained back their strength and endurance and seemed to truly enjoy the free daily meals of rabbit, rat and fish. Snowy Owl Rescue KenScottPhotography 2019-02-24 | On Feb 22, 2019 Wings of Wonder received a call about a Snowy Owl that, according to the finder, was injured and needed to be rescued in Empire, MI. Ken Scott and Rebecca Lessard gathered up handling gloves, a pet crate, towels and a blanket, and headed to the location where the owl was last seen. Upon arrival they easily found the beautiful wing imprints and tracks in the snow leading to where the owl was ‘hiding’. It was immediately apparent that the owl was not injured but instead was sitting on a large chunk of meat … perhaps a rabbit or squirrel. There were several resident crows in the nearby trees, loudly sounding their alarm cries, who were clearly upset about the owl in their neighborhood. Iced Eagle Rescue on Lake Michigan - released! KenScottPhotography 2019-02-12 | Rebecca Lessard: As a follow up to the rescue video of the bald eagle on feb 1, 2019 (youtube.com/watch?v=Oe5XtDg0FxQ). On Sunday, February 10, 2019, Wings of Wonder invited the public to the release of this bald eagle from the Suttons Bay High School parking lot. The Grand Traverse Band drummers and singers started the event out with a beautiful spiritual song honoring this adult bald eagle. Hundreds of people, of all ages, came to witness the eagle fly free once again. The eagle flew off, towards the Lake Michigan shoreline, with grace, purpose and strength landing on a tree branch about 300 yards away. Within minutes 2 adult bald eagles appeared, soaring overhead, checking out the perched eagle. It was a glorious day indeed. Because of the wave action, it was being prevented from freezing into shelf ice and so it looks almost like its in slow motion. Polly the Pelican ... rehabilitated KenScottPhotography 2017-10-09 | I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Rebecca Lessard of Wings of Wonder as she rehabilitated Polly ... thank you WoW!In summary, as presented by WoW: “Polly”, an American White Pelican, was rescued from Bear Lake, Michigan and admitted to Wings of Wonder, in Empire, Michigan, on August 14, 2017 for rehabilitation. This hatch-year youngster had a severe injury to her left eye, was thin and dehydrated, and was covered with mites, lice and flukes….she was in rough shape. Over the many weeks Polly gained back her health and her sweet personality blossomed. Due to the permanent blindness in her left eye and her lack of depth perception she would not be able to survive life in the wild. “Polly” was transferred to the North East Wisconsin Zoo on September 23, 2017. Polly will remain in quarantine for about a month before being introduced into her new permanent outdoor space, which comes with a roommate…a lovely adult male American White Pelican. We wish her a long and pampered life at the NEW Zoo. Flipn Raptors ... a flipbook workshop KenScottPhotography 2017-03-08 | Wings of Wonder and Ken Scott Photography collaborated to offer a workshop called “Flip’n Raptors” on March 4, 2017 for students ages 9-12 years old. This workshop introduced the art of making flip books while using a Wings of Wonder raptor as a model. Students learned about raptors, had the opportunity to investigate/study a variety of raptor artifacts and were introduced to the making of flip books. The workshop taught students how to interpret the raptor’s movements into simple line drawings to tell a short story via flip’n their book. Lake Michigan Ice Balls ... KenScottPhotography 2015-12-30 | 'ice balls' along Lake Michigan shoreline near Traverse City this time ... I never know where they will show up, but they usually do every year. Interestingly the little bit of western shoreline I visited this same day, there was no ice buildup ... the only buildup I found was on the eastern side of Leelanau and then only in cove like spots that could 'herd' the balls together. Another interesting finding is their weight ... I assumed they were heavy like the ones I find on the shore, but as you can see in the clip, picking one up and tossing it was no problem ... they were made of frozen slush, but of a very airy consistancy. They were dense with water, but when lifted, the water poured out of it leaving a 'honey comb' like ball of ice.
