Oyster eating at Miyajima Island in Hiroshima Japan.
★ Hiroshima Oysters / 広島牡蠣
- Grilled (yaki gaki) 500 yen ($5 - $6)
Touring Hiroshima and Miyajima I had to sample the famous, popular and locally grown oysters - known as kaki in Japan. This video was taken at a small street food stall. I purchased two grilled oysters (yaki gaki) for 500 yen and ate them with a little soy sauce
added.
Where is Miyajima? It's 15 minutes by train from JR Hiroshima Station and a 15 minute ferry ride to the island.

Hiroshima Prefecture accounts for approximately 60-70% of Japan's oyster production. Oysters produced in the region are both consumed domestically and shipped overseas. Oysters are offered at many dining establishments in Hiroshima and Miyajima such as restaurants, food stands and ryokan. They are eaten raw with soy sauce or ponzu, deep-fried, baked, grilled or served on top of rice (donburi).
Hiroshima oysters have small shells, but their meat is large, plump, and rich in flavor. Hiroshima Bay is the perfect place for oysters to grow. It has gentle terrain and currents, as well as an abundance of plankton for the oysters to eat. Thanks to the river that flows into it, the bay also has the perfect concentration of salt water. The oysters are juicy and creamy as they are, with no seasonings. They are available to enjoy at specialty restaurants and izakaya (Japanese taverns / pubs) throughout the prefecture.
Oysters can be enjoyed a number of ways:
1. Raw Oysters
2. Yakigaki (Grilled Oysters)
3. Kaki Fry (Deep-fried Oysters)
4. Kaki-meshi (Oyster Rice Bowl)
5. Kaki-nabe (hotpot)
