Big news for the five people that liked my last update of this sadly elusive duo! Predating Live at Hedon, Zwolle by almost four months, this practice tape shows a much earlier version of that disc's setlist. The uber-tight routines between Edan and Oxygen there are much looser here, still being figured out. Indeed, some songs like I Get Lifted (totally absent from the final set) have multiple takes here. This awesome version of I See Colours (closer to the original LP version, but still feeling a bit stripped-back) has a false start as well. The Impromptu closer, Groove to Get Down is an awesome jam that we sadly can barely hear Ox over.
Amazing scratching and drop-ins by EDAN here, whenever he drops that follow up to B&TB, or even a sequel to Echo Party, I will be there! Such interesting juggles with fresh takes on standard samples. I know it's not intentional, but the hot mixing and off-the-cuff nature reminds me of Griselda and Daupe!-types that would go on to become so prevalent years later.
This disc was recorded on the 14th, and these initial ten copies were sold at the merch stand at a show two days later. A second run of 30 copies with some fantastic graffiti art by Oxygen were sold at the same record store this was recorded in, as well as inexplicably over discogs for a remaining ten copies.
The description for this CD mix calls it 'raw and unedited', which is clear to hear (not a bad thing)! Still, I am struck by what a great album this might make with slight mixing tweaks and editing down. Later on in 2013 and again in 2018, cassette runs of this album were sold. I know those ones at least split I Get Lifted between sides A and B, but I am unsure if they are otherwise edited. Would love to rip one someday and find out!! Perhaps I will make my own fan mix some day.
