I'm putting up two videos that both pushed me over into Grandmaster at different times in the last two seasons. I first hit GM in Season 7 as Winston, in arguably one of his better seasons, and proceeded to be "Hardstuck Masters" for the rest of eternity, generally ranking around 3750-3999. Most of Season 9-13 was me one-tricking Doomfist to still have fun in a game where I accepted that Master was my permanent sitting place. I felt that I was caught in an eternal 50/50 grind and it just depended on who I got and when I got them.

When Doomfist was nerfed into the ground in Season 14, I actually hit GM again. I had adopted a regiment to playing, wherein I only joined comp mode after warm up matches in Deathmatch, and only after I'd proven my apitude for aim/reaction/awareness. Simply put, I did not allow myself to play comp mode tired, and I did not play it straight out the gate. I also, somewhat paranoid-like, kept a journal of what time periods I lost more often, and blacklisted myself from playing comp mode during these periods. This ended up being most of Wednesday and early till afternoon Saturday. Wednesday was a low player count issue, as I tend to play in the morning/afternoon, and it resulted in me being less likely to get a proper functioning team roster, meaning I'd be less likely to use Doomfist. Saturday seemed to be a matter of people not taking the game as seriously, as it was the weekend spam of everyone.

This, combined with a considerable increase in aim practice needed to handle Doom's terrible new slam/uppercut, pushed me the 150 or so long-term SR needed to keep me sitting in GM.

The most interesting thing about these plays to me is how much of their value exists outside of the action itself. This shatter with Reinhardt is built upon multiple rounds of understanding who the enemy were, the aptitude of my own team, and who could be abused. Simply put, in solo queue, the worst player and the best player on each team tilt the scales harder than anyone else. It became evident over play that the enemy Reinhardt was consistently too aggressive. Intentionally moving into this over aggression is what allowed me to get the fatty shatty. In this clip, even if Rein blocked, my hammer would go beyond his shield and into his team. There's a bit of ult overkill by my team, but its shrugged off by the fact that its a full point secure, and we'll build ult combos before the next timer gets low.
