This adventure my brother and I hike to a remote lake on the Kenai Peninsula with the goal to experience some of the best wild ice skating Alaska has to offer. We brought our hot tent to spend the night and experience the other worldly sounds the ice makes as night fell.
Wild ice skating is a rare opportunity that must be seized in the moment if one wants to experience it. For me it had been 5 years since I last got to experience the beauty of skating fresh ice on one of the large lakes. There are short windows of time through out the winter where they freeze over before they get covered in snow. I've tried in recent years to find ice like this, but have been turned away either by snow or overflow. I've found that there can often be only a week of time to get out there before the conditions change. So, when I saw the conditions were perfect I packed my things and made the 500 mile drive from Fairbanks down to the Kenai Peninsula with the hopes to find this ice. Lo and behold we found it.
