Keen followed this talk with four hours of new materials on Sunday, November 18, 2012 at the International Conference on Sustainability, Transition and Culture Change: Vision - Action - Leadership sponsored by Local Future, a non-profit educational organization.
EXTENDED BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Steve Keen received the Revere Award from the Real World Economics Review in 2010 for being the economist who most cogently warned of the economic crisis, and whose work is most likely to prevent future crises. He is Professor of Economics & Finance at the University of Western Sydney and author of "Debunking Economics" (2012).
Extended Biography of Steve Keen
Dr. Keen was one of the handful of economists to realize that a serious economic crisis was coming our way, and to publicly warn of it from as early as December 2005 (mpra.ub.uni-muenchen.de/15892/). This, and his pioneering work on modeling debt-deflation, resulted in him winning the Revere Award from the Real World Economics Review (rwer.wordpress.com/) for being the economist whose work is most likely to prevent a future financial crisis. He is one of the handful of economists to receive a grant from the Institute for New Economic Thinking (http://www.ineteconomics.org).
Dr. Keen was able to predict the crisis due to economic work that expands upon Keyes, Fischer, and Minsky, utilizing an accounting, flow of funds or circuit model. He was one of the few economists studied for the paper "No One Saw This Coming" (2009) by Bezemer, Dirk J. He is commonly interviewed by TV stations and written up in the press. He is often invited to meetings of financial advisors, hedge funds and economic conferences, world wide.
It's Time to Put Money Into the Equation (includes video interview)
Dr. Keen maintains a highly influential blog on economics (debtdeflation.com/blogs) and his book Debunking Economics is a classic exposition of why Neoclassical economic theory is not only wrong, but more of a threat to the survival of capitalism than any number of left-wing revolutionaries. The second extended edition was published in October 2011.
Dr. Keen is Professor of Economics & Finance at the University of Western Sydney, and author of the popular book Debunking Economics (Zed Books UK, 2001; www.debunkingeconomics.com). He has over 70 academic publications on topics as diverse as financial instability, the money creation process, mathematical flaws in the conventional model of supply and demand, flaws in Marxian economics, the application of physics to economics, Islamic finance, and the role of chaos and complexity theory in economics. His work has been translated into Chinese, German and Russian.
Steve Keen's Debtwatch blog (debtdeflation.com/blogs) makes his non-orthodox approach to economics available to the public. The site has over 12,000 subscribers and more than 50,000 unique readers each month.
Dr. Keen's excellent communication skills were honed in his pre-academic career, which included stints as a school librarian, education officer for an NGO, conference organizer, computer programmer, journalist for the computer press, and economic commentator for ABC Radio National and Radio Australia.

Daniel Quinn, writer, and author of best selling philosophical novel Ishmael (1992), shares his home library with Aaron Wissner of Local Future in a home visit. In 1991, Ishmael won the $500,000 [Ted] Turner Tomorrow Fellowship for the best unpublished work of fiction offering creative and positive solutions to global problems. Wissner traveled to Houston to spend three days interviewing Daniel Quinn, August 17-19, 2012, in lieu of Daniel traveling to Michigan for Aarons Local Future conference.
About Daniel Quinn
Daniel Quinn (1935-2018) grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, where he graduated from Creighton Prep in 1953. He studied at St. Louis University, the University of Vienna, and Loyola University of Chicago, receiving a bachelor’s degree in English, cum laud, in 1957.
During a twenty-year career in educational and consumer publishing in Chicago, he served as Biography and Fine Arts editor at the American Peoples Encyclopedia, managing editor of the Greater Cleveland Mathematics Program (Science Research Associates), head of the mathematics department at Encyclopedia Britannica Educational Corporation, Executive Editor of Fuller & Dees Publishing (a division of the Times Mirror Corporation) and Editorial Director of the Society for Visual Education (a division of the Singer Corporation).
Mr. Quinn is best known as the author of Ishmael, the novel that in 1991 won the Turner Tomorrow Fellowship, established to encourage authors to seek “creative and positive solutions to global problems.” Ishmael has been in print continuously since its publication in 1992 and has been made available in more than 25 languages. Throughout the U.S. and Canada and in other countries as well, Ishmael is used as a text in a broad range of classes that include anthropology, ecology, history, literature, philosophy, ethics, biology, and psychology, at age levels from middle school through graduate level.
He followed Ishmael with an autobiography, Providence (1994), The Story Of B (1996), a novel that continues the philosophical and religious exploration begun in Ishmael; and My Ishmael: A Sequel (1997), in which it’s learned that, unbeknownst to the narrator of Ishmael, Ishmael was working with another pupil, a twelve-year-old girl.

![What is money? The Future of Money with Thomas Greco & Aaron Wissner | Local Future
Thomas H. Greco Jr., author of The End of Money and the Future of Civilization, and Money: Understanding and Creating Alternatives to Legal Tender discusses money, exchange, what needs to happen in the future, and how to democratize the money, credit, and the exchange of value.
What is money? Where does it come from? Is gold money? What is the essence of money? What are the alternatives to it?
Midway through, Aaron poses a question on a possible way to exchange goods in a peer-to-peer manner, which leads to a deeper level of understanding regarding the essence of money.
Whats important is that we find ways to reduce our dependence on mega-structures; to find ways to relocalize our economies, to decentralize power; to work together in cooperation to make our communities more resilient, more self reliant, and more able to withstand the predations of large government, large corporations, and large organizations.
