February 4, 2020 - For a player who has had the career that Alex Ovechkin has, especially in his younger years, it might be surprising to hear that of all his goal-scoring hot streaks, the hottest came in his age-34 season. Heading into this Tuesday night matchup with the Kings, the Great 8 sported a ridiculous 11 goals in his last 6 games, the last game of which, he didn't even score in. One might think that he was due for a cold streak, and through two periods it sure seemed that way. Ovechkin's night hadn't been spectacular by any means. Through almost 54 minutes of regulation, he hadn't registered a single shot. With the Kings up 2-1, it appeared the Caps were heading for another boring, low-scoring loss. But then, Ovi happened. Ovechkin found open space to put home a great feed by TJ Oshie to tie the game. While Capitals PA Announcer Wes Johnson was announcing the goal to the home crowd, Ovechkin struck again, this time taking advantage of a misplay by Johnathan Quick on his initial shot. In just over a minute, the Caps had gone from trailing to having the lead with under five minutes to go. With the empty net, the Capitals captain fired home a dead-center shot from his own zone to seal the game and record his 27th career hat trick. As if that wasn't enough, it made him the first player to hit 40 goals on the season, putting him just one behind tying Wayne Gretzky's NHL record of 12 seasons, as well as both his fastest hat trick ever, and so far the only natural hat trick he has ever scored. The hat trick also gave him an absurd 14 goals in his last 7 games, which featured 5 multi-goal games and 3 hat tricks. To top it all off, the goal was the 698th of his career, which put him just 2 goals away from becoming one of just eight players to score 700. The hot streak finally ended when Ovechkin went goalless in his next five games, but no one who watched will forget the goal-scoring binge Ovi went on in early 2020.
