October 13, 2021 - Coming off of what was considered a down year by his standards (24 goals in 45 games), Alex Ovechkin looked to once again show that he wasn't slowing down yet as he entered his 16th season. With the ultimate goal of breaking Wayne Gretzky's career goals record still over 150 tallies away, the Great 8 set his sights on a more immediate milestone. Coming into the 2021-22 season, he sat just one goal behind Marcel Dionne on the all-time goals list with 730. After recording an assist in each of the first two periods, Ovechkin got in the goals column to tie Dionne with a power play goal. Just under 10 minutes of game time later, Ovechkin would pass Dionne for good, this time in a more unusual fashion. With a 4-on-4 expiring, the Rangers would go on the power play for all of seven seconds. But that was enough time for Ovi to sneak in behind the Rangers' defense and receive a bank pass off the end boards from Evgeny Kuznetsov before beating Georgiev on the backhand. Not only did Ovechkin move past Dionne for 5th place all alone, he also recorded just the fourth shorthanded goal of his career and first since January 3, 2009 - ironically also at home against the Rangers. The game kicked off one of Ovechkin's best age 30+ seasons as he would go on to score 50 for an NHL record-tying 9th time and hit the 90-point plateau for the first time since 2009-10.
