This year I went to NAMM 2026, where I got to see one of my favorite players, Isaiah Sharkey, perform. Luckily, I had my cellphone ready to film some of his playing. I always struggled with playing fast, clean pentatonic runs — especially those flowing blues-rock lines you hear from players like Eric Johnson and Joe Bonamassa and Eric Gales.
Then I came across an old video of Eric Johnson talking about his picking technique. So I tried it. In this video, Ill show you 3 exercises that helped me get this approach under my fingers. Well start slowly and work toward faster, cleaner pentatonic runs that you can actually use in your playing.
This approach is especially useful if youre into blues, blues rock, R&B, neo-soul, and modern guitar phrasing and want your pentatonic playing to feel more fluid and expressive.
