In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for Switch, it is possible to outrun blue shells and red shells! This is most visible in the 200cc class, where the shells travel really slowly after they lock on to a player. Hopefully this will be patched in a later update.

It's been over 2 years, and no patch has been released. Looks like the blue shells will have to chase us to the grave.
