Water alone is not very good at wetting things – in a scientific sense. This sounds paradoxical, but the formation of drops of water on an oily skin, for instance, illustrates how interfacial tension in water inhibits close contact with other surfaces.
The film uses demonstrations and animated drawings to show in a simple way how the detergent weakens the tensions at the water surfaces, breaks down oily and greasy dirt, and holds it in suspension with the aid of agitation and forces of electrical repulsion. The basic construction of the detergent molecule is illustrated to explain how it performs these functions.
