“In the outdoors, there have been a lot of women’s programs. That’s cool—and the majority of those programs are still white-women centered,” says Monserrat Alvarez Matehuala. “We need to be able to talk about race as much as we talk about gender.”

Monserrat is working to build spaces and programs specifically for women of color in the climbing world—and she’s hopeful for the future.
