Pontoon boat transoms can generate splashing and quite a undesirable salt spray from the aft of the transom where the outboard mounts. Due to the carburetor intake of air, a slight negative suction pressure is created under the cover cowling to the powerhead which can suck the saltwater spray inside the cover. The saltwater that gets under the cover can cause corrosion of the power trim/tilt relays, sparkplugs and all of the other wiring. The deflectors shown here mounted on the transom on either side of the motor prevent the water from splashing up on the cowling cover and getting drawn in.
