Camshafts can be a common failure point for these V10 TDIs. Our 2006 Touareg had this issue with mushroomed-out lobes and worn lifters. It probably wouldn't have caused the car to stop running completely, but would have allowed metal shavings to get inside the engine and cause further trouble.
