We finally made it inside Fire Tower 13.
But almost immediately, we started realizing this wasn’t a normal fire lookout assignment.
Inside the station, we discovered an employee package left behind for us — instructions for operating the tower, emergency procedures, weather equipment, radio frequencies, and a list of tasks we were expected to complete before the end of our shift.
At first, everything seemed legitimate.
Log the weather.
Set up the lookout equipment.
Complete a radio check.
Monitor the surrounding forest.
Report any signs of smoke.
But mixed between the normal instructions were rules that didn’t make any sense.
And after booting up the FIRE WATCH computer system inside the tower, our assignment officially began.
We started contacting other lookout stations in the area, recording weather conditions, checking equipment and exploring everything the previous lookout had left behind.
That’s when we started finding things we weren’t supposed to see.
An unfinished whiteboard.
Old emergency documents.
Incident reports.
Personal belongings that were never taken home.
And a logbook from the previous lookout repeatedly mentioning one specific location:
NORTH TRAIL.
The entries described strange lights in the forest, unexplained activity around the tower and things happening beyond the northern side of the mountain that the previous employee couldn’t explain.
Then we started hearing noises ourselves.
Something moving through the woods below us.
Scratching beneath the tower.
And eventually…
screaming somewhere in the distance.
Not long after, we spotted what looked like smoke rising through the trees near North Trail.
The FIRE WATCH system gave us a new assignment:
Investigate it.
So two of us left the safety of Tower 13 and followed the trail north while one person remained behind at the lookout.
The farther we walked, the stranger the forest became.
We began finding disturbing signs along the trail that made us question whether the smoke was actually coming from a wildfire at all.
Then we found the source.
Hidden deep in the woods was an abandoned fire pit.
And inside…
was a skeleton.
At that point, this was no longer a fire watch.
Something had happened on North Trail.
And whatever happened out there may have been the reason we were sent to Tower 13 in the first place.

going back to the tower might have been an even bigger mistake.
