Today in Ghana, we stood at the sacred “Last Bath” at Assin Manso — the place where captured Africans took their final bath on African soil before being marched to the slave castles at Cape Coast and Elmina. (Wikipedia)
What made this moment even heavier was learning that the numbers often shared at this particular site tell the story of those connected to this route of captivity — hundreds of thousands who perished, and hundreds of thousands who survived the Middle Passage from this region. Their suffering is not abstract history to us. We are their descendants.
And now, generations later, we have returned.
Not as cargo.
Not in chains.
But as sons and daughters of the Diaspora reconnecting spiritually, culturally, and economically with our Motherland.
Standing there praying over my wife, the M.A.D.E. Collective, and our future generations deeply moved me. You could feel the weight of grief, resilience, survival, and destiny in the atmosphere.
What slavery tried to sever, we are working to restore.
What was stolen, we are reclaiming.
What was once called the Door of No Return has become for us a journey of return, remembrance, and rebuilding.
Africa is not just where we came from.
It is part of where we are going.
