Our house was on fire. I didn't even know.
Last weekend I was heading out on a dirt bike ride with Jack and the Sweet Loaf. I forgot something in my bedroom and ran back inside. That's when I smelled smoke.
Around the corner of the house a fence post was actively burning. The mulch had been smoldering underground for nearly 24 hours — building heat completely undetected beneath the surface. If I hadn't forgotten something in my room we would have come home to a smoking crater.
That was the wake-up call.
We are four weeks ahead of normal fire season this year due to drought and low snowfall. So today I'm going through our complete urban interface fire kit — everything I keep on hand to protect this property, my neighbors, and anyone who needs help moving fast on a fire before it becomes a conflagration.
