In all seriousness, the emerald ash borer is a small invasive beetle that attacks ash trees. Its larvae live under the bark and damage the tree from the inside, eventually causing it to weaken and die.
Plano is actively replacing vulnerable ash trees during planned park projects with a more diverse mix of trees that fit each location. Select ash trees may be treated and monitored instead, and removed trees are recycled into mulch through Texas Pure Products.
Have an ash tree at home? Watch for thinning branches near the top, new shoots growing from the trunk, loose or splitting bark, increased woodpecker activity or tiny D-shaped holes. These signs can have other causes, so contact a certified arborist if something looks unusual.
You can also help slow the spread by not moving untreated firewood. Buy it where you burn it.
