Anxiety disorders are among the most prevalent mental health conditions worldwide, shaped by complex interactions between biological vulnerability, psychological processes and rapidly changing social environments. This themed issue of The British Journal of Psychiatry brings together contemporary clinical perspectives, empirical evidence and conceptual advances in psychiatry to examine the heterogeneity, comorbidity and often delayed recognition of anxiety disorders, and to invite a renewed focus on timely identification, integrated care and improved outcomes.
