Breaking Down The Grand Prix Dressage Horse - Bad Behavior VS Bad Riding
updated
Upon entering the Rotterdam Arena, Salvino’s noseband broke.
“I was trotting down the outside, and he felt really good,” said Lyle. “All of a sudden he threw his head in the air, and I looked down and realized the noseband was flapping around. I immediately turned and ran back to the in-gate.”
It was all hands-on deck from there, with Lyle’s groom Morgan Klingensmith and members of the Dutta Corp. U.S. Dressage Team scrambling to fix the faulty tack.
“My groom always has extras of everything; anything you might need in case of emergency,” said Lyle. “[The noseband] wasn’t the right size for him; it was just an extra we had in the bag, so we had to make some quick adjustments to get it on in time for them to let me go back in.
“We have such a great team; they didn’t hesitate at all to rush in and help me,” Lyle continued. “I trotted [to the in-gate] like, ‘What do I do? I guess I have to excuse myself; I can’t go in with a broken bridle,’ and then all of a sudden they’re whipping out nosebands from backpacks.”
With the pressure already on—the competition doubled as an observation event for a team spot for the 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games (North Carolina)—the 11-year-old Hanoverian stallion (Sandro Hit—Dynastie, Donnerhall) managed to hold it together for a final score of 71.91 percent.
“It wasn’t his strongest showing,” admitted Lyle. “At the beginning of the test he was very tense; I could feel it in his back and in the connection. We put the noseband on in a rush, so I don’t think things were fitting comfortably, and he didn’t feel very comfortable [in his mouth], so I just tried to finesse our way through the test. We got through it, which was all we were trying to do at that point.”
At the end of her test, Lyle, 33, Ketchum, Idaho, gave Salvino a pat on the neck, a rub of the ear and a kiss to reward him for his cooperation.
“I [didn’t] want him to have a terrible experience, so I just [tried] to keep him calm,” said Lyle. “I was really impressed that for being a stallion, never having been in that big ring before and having all this commotion, that he was able to get it together as fast as he did. At least he didn’t say, ‘I can’t do it.’ ”
The Dutta Corp. U.S. Dressage Team, comprised of Lyle on Salvino, Olivia LaGoy-Weltz on Lonoir, Kasey Perry-Glass on Goerklintgaards Dublet, and Steffen Peters on Rosamunde, finished in third place in the Nations Cup competition.

This rider looks like they were put on a schoolmaster two weeks before the Pan Am Games and told to go compete for their country. This ride is beyond a disaster it should have never happened in the first place. The horse is so overwhelmed by the aids being all over the place that it looks for an exit strategy from life when she heads into the walk pirouettes.

In the Grand Prix dressage freestyle at the world cup in Mechelen, the tail did have slightly more movement than we noticed in the grand prix, however the horses tongue was waving at the judges at several points during the dressage test. I pulled one short clip to discuss the blue tongue so that we could start the conversation about judging.
What do you think about the blue tongue and the dressage judging at the World cup grand prix with Lottie Fry and Everdale?

I don't have the answers but I know that you do. Why does a horse stop swishing its tail? Does it become better balance? Is it braided too tight? Botox? Nerve damage? What causes such a dramatic change?
Also ... is braiding tails about to become a new trend in #dressage?

On Friday Canadian Alexandra Duncan was eliminated on the final centerline when her horse went into an absolute meltdown.
On a fun side note Dressage Hub was actually in the stadium to witness this event live. We also saw the judges conduct the fastest elmination I have ever seen since I started posting these disasters. It clocks at exactly 20 seconds.

While reading the comments section on EuroDressage this week I found these comments and photos that allege that Evi Strasser has abused her dressage horses.
The abuse in dressage is widespread at the top of the sport and as many equestrians gather the courage to name and shame the top grand prix riders in the sport, dressage had better be ready for the fall.

In light of the Operation X documentary on TV2 in Denmark, showcasing the amount of abuse going on at his dressage stable, there was public outcry for change within the sport of dressage.
While Andreas Helgstrand is one example of the abuse in dressage it is certainly not in isolation.

The short answer is that they abuse people as much as they abuse horses.
I have the worlds greatest fans here at Dressage Hub, and about once a month I have someone send me something to publish. Abuse is a tricky space to navigate. While Astrid over at Euro Dressage is mostly concerned about lawsuits and refrains from publising the abuse, I generally want to ensure that all of the whistle blowers are going to remain safe.
SafeSport does not protect working students and grooms from the hidden world of abuse in the sport of dressage. So let's get into it.
If you have been following the scandal around Operation X where TV2 in Denmark sent a groom undercover into the Helgstrand Dressage sales barn, you are going to want to watch this.

Here is what she had to say on Facebook.
How many of you critics of horse trainers out there have experience enough to really back up what you are complaining about? Seriously? And do you confirm it’s actual abuse before you jump on the bandwagon of hating? When you see blood in the mouth, have you found out for sure whether it was an innocent mistake that the horse just pinched their own lip before you acuse the trainer of ABUSE? If you hate that a horse is behind the vertical, have you asked whether that rider would like as much as anyone to keep the nose out and poll up but the horse naturally goes too deep and isn’t strong enough yet to hold that advanced balance before you decide to HATE? One of my horses runs free in her pasture waaay behind the vertical because that’s natural for her. Who will you hate for that? Just curious.
There is no shortage of abusive riding, ego and greed in the training business for sure. I don’t need reminders about that so save your comments. 🙄 I’m actually not even talking about the opX debacle. Just responding to where so many online critics are taking this. No one should train with anger, or lack of awareness of what they’re trying to get across to their horse and must be able to recognize when they have made their point and stop there. Abusive riding most often is involving emotion and anger and when there’s no recognition of the right answer from the horse and the rider goes on past that point. The other most common, insidious abusiveness is lack of correct rider biomechanics together with aids totally conflicting what the rider’s body is inherently telling the horse to do.
But I do have to stand to for my fellow, skilled and mentally balanced, compassionate and body aware trainers out there who now fear if you so much as brush your horse wrong you will be banned and blamed for everything. I mean trainers who take the responsibility of being balanced, non emotional, consistent and aware of the correctness of their own bodies as #1 priority! We are not to blame when horses are born with kissing spines and can’t stand up to normal healthy riding, or have genetic OCDs that eventually become their demise even with the most correct and passionate program in the horse’s best interest, or twist a gut because horses have a tricky digestive set up and it just happens.
One person writes how it’s so terrible that the average age of horses in a certain country is 7. While that is a depressing fact, be careful about blaming that all on over pushing training or bad riding. I had one in particular with 3 problem limbs before he was even in training at all and had to be retired before he even started. Warmbloods in general are more than ever being bred for big movement and good looks rather than health and substance and are born with myriad health issues or insufficiencies. Of course there are some breeders who prioritize the right things!! But many don’t.
Horses often come out of the womb with issues from tongue habits to nervousness and over reactivity. If you haven’t been around alot of breeding and foals to young horses, you can’t comment on that. If you have, you’ve seen it yourself. If we’re very lucky, we get one that truly is just a middle of the road, blank slate with no weak areas. Horses that have behavioral issues from birth that aren’t given the right kind of leadership and boundaries and training will live their lives suffering from their own demons. I can’t tell you how many horses I’ve helped get over their fears and insecurities by making sure training gives them life skills and confidence in me and themselves. Without guidance, so many horses would remain terrified of their own weaknesses and remain or become dangerous to handlers and riders and end up in much worse situations or hurting someone. In many cases, it can be dramatic what they get themselves into. And our job as trainers is to somehow magically get them through it without any stress? Sometimes just getting through a session without any drama is impossible because of what they bring to it. Just staying calm in a room with a crazy person is a skill in itself!
I really didn’t want to get involved in this online maelstrom but i feel it’s necessary to protect those of us who are out there putting our lives on the line to give horses a good, healthy education. It’s a very tough job that is impossible to perfect and now we’re going to be looking over our shoulder constantly for the next secret camera and overzealous critic. If you want to change the trainers, change what the judges reward and how the horses are bred!

Today the Danish Dressage Federation got caught with their pants down so to speak. Operation X aired on TV2 last night and showcased the abuse that is taking place at Helgstrand Dressage. In response the Danish Dressage Federation made an attempt to look like they are doing something they have offered up a temporary ban until the dust settles and people move on.
This is a short-term solution to help make them look like they are being proactive in the eyes of the public.
They were informed about the abusive practices happening at Helgstrand Dressage and against the advice of a vet, they turned a blind eye. The problem is systemic.

One of her friends reached out to me to remove the video to say that the horse became lame once the test started. SInce I don;t take kindly to being gaslit I decided to look into it further and this is what I found.
Her young rider's dressage horse was definitely lame in the team dressage test however not as bad as it was in the individual test. What do you think?

The last videos features Katherine Bateson and Haute Couture alongside Anouk Nordman and Zeronica in the Grand Prix. Both horses get a little bit wild during the test and the end result is different for both parties.
Anouk Nordman retired after the bell was rung and it was reported as retired rather than an elimination.
Katherine Bateson managed to tactfully ride Haute Couture to a complete Grand Prix dressage test.

This horse started out looking good in the grand prix dressage test, then suddenly half way through the extended trot the horse takes several uneven steps. The rider (who is awesome) pulls up and excuses herself from the test.
The judge who should have had one of the best views of the sudden lameness had no idea what just happened and had to ask the rider why she retired. What that play out.
Last week we showed you a series of riders who continued to ride their horses through the grand prix while lame. It is refreshing to see a talented rider that is able to feel that her horse is taking uneven steps and retires immediately.

This is not the first time we have called out dressage riders for taking lame horses down the centerline in the grand prix, you can watch Jill Irving finish the grand prix on DH, but it is the most that we have ever seen in one weekend.
You cannot watch this and tell me that not one single person that is part of any of these team did not stop for a single moment to say, maybe today is not your day to ride the grand prix dressage test. This is a complete and total dressage fail and is why we feature so many dressage disasters here at Dressage Hub.
This an absolute fail not only by what should be some of the top riders in the sport but the top vets, grooms and stewards that should be monitoring the warm-up ring.
*Note for Karen: I should not be able to make this video is the world's best dressage riders were in fact doing what they do well.

This year has been exceptional for Canada in terms of dressage disasters, 3 dressage riders have actually fallen off at the Global Dressage Festival. If there ever was an argument against helmets the Canadian riders have ensured that dressage will never return to top hats.
In this video we watch Evi Strasser, Brooke Mancusi, Ally Dunlop and more have an epic equestrian fail one after another.
The bar is so low you can fall off and be on a team as long as you have money.
*Note for Karen - Instead of being mad that I posted, be mad that it happened. No need to worry about my skill level as I have ridden at a higher level than all but one of these riders. I trust that means you think I am qualified to have the opinions that I do and will accept them because of that.

In reality, I think the rider went in to give this horse the opportunity to end this ride on a good note. As soon as the test is going well the rider excuses herself from the dressage ring.
*Note for Karen: I know you are here looking for the name of the rider, however, since you asked that I removed the names of the riders from the videos, I am doing so .... just for you. You are welcome!

Someone needs to coin the marketing slogan "Helmets, For when you can't fix bad horsemanship."
Dressage riders have jacked up and trigger-stacked the FEI dressage horses so much that they are literally no longer capable of being a harmonious or even submissive partner in the dressage ring.
The inception of bigger thigh rolls allows riders to be capable of riding higher levels of dressage than they are physically capable of. Riders are over horsed and it is not a good look for dressage.
Carrie Schopf is 65 years old and probably as invincible as the young rider we saw crash in yesterday's video. But at what point do we hold the team around these riders accountable for their safety. There is a coach, trainer, groom or someone along the line that probably could have said this horse is a bit hot today. Or is it because there was a trigger-stacked warm-up that set the horse up for failure.
Yesterday's crash: youtu.be/2KZHfncD0d0
These crashes are not just a dressage disaster for each of these riders it is a complete disaster for the sport. As it continues in the direction that I have been talking about over the past few years. My videos garner a lot of hate but I am not wrong.
Dressage has evolved and so have the disasters. It is time to bring back safety and animal welfare into the sport before we lose it forever.
Steps off soapbox
Notes For Karen: Something did not just happen in that corner. This horse has ridden at this venue for years. It is also a Grand Prix Dressage horse that should be able to fly around the world from venue to venue without any problems. Training is the point of dressage.

We have seen some pretty crafty tactics to win around here at Dressage Hub but we haven't seen a dressage rider try to take out all of the competition at once like a bowling ball in the warm-up. That is, at least until now. Well played.
*Note for karen: horse and rider are fine.

At the FEI World Cup Grand Prix in Amsterdam, the commentary went from gushing about Queensparks Wendy to gushing blood in just a matter of a few minutes.
Andreas Helgstrand was eliminated half way through his grand prix dressage test resulting in this dressage disaster.
The worst part of this dressage disaster is Natasha Baker trying to gaslight fans into believing that this is a totally normal and acceptable part of the sport. I disagree.
I suspect with the elimination of marshmallow fluff, known here at Dressage Hub as Fluffgate, we will see many more blood eliminations in the dressage ring.
While I tend to keep my opinions to myself on the dressage disasters I did want to take the opportunity to walk you through this one.
A few years ago we had a guest do several videos in which we explained trigger stacking and what it looks like in a dressage disaster. The series also talks about why horses ridden in rolkur are more likely to enter the dressage ring trigger stacked.
You can watch those videos here:
To help people understand what we here at Dressage Hub see is happening in this test we posted a few additional videos.
One is a veterinarian talking about Anoxia and fear is triggered in horses that are trained using rolkur. You can watch that video titled - That Horse Is Not Spooking, He Thinks He Is Dying here:
youtu.be/zO8_F5bQMPw
The second video we published discussed trigger stacking and how to understand the elements of fear in horses and how this test is not a simple spook but rather a combination of triggers to send this horse into a state of fear and flight. You can watch the video on the basics of trigger stacking here:

Judy Reynolds shows the dessage community what it looks like to have a healthy training partnership with your dressage horse and how a dressage disaster can easily be averted when you use solid training principles in your program.
While this ride is far from perfect it is representative of how a true horseperson and a well-seasoned professional handles a dressage disaster.
