One of the most instantly recognizable comedy props in film history, Otto the Autopilot from the 1980 classic Airplane! is making a triumphant return — this time on the runway, in the pilot’s seat, and headed to auction.
Screen-matched and from the personal collection of Airplane! co-director Jerry Zucker, this original hero Otto is more than a movie prop. He is a true icon of cinematic absurdity: calm under pressure, perfectly smug, and somehow still more composed than most passengers during turbulence.
Constructed from durable marine-grade PVC-coated nylon, Otto features hand-painted facial details, pilot uniform artwork, a detachable Velcro-affixed head, and his rear-mounted air inlet for inflation. He also retains one of the film’s most infamous gag elements: the alternate “manual inflation” nozzle used in one of Airplane!’s most unforgettable comedic sequences.
In this video, Otto returns to aviation duty at a small California airport, where he takes his rightful place beside — and inside — a private jet. With help from a real pilot, new cockpit footage, and expert insight into Otto’s history, we celebrate the unlikely inflatable star who helped make Airplane! one of the most beloved comedies ever made.
Long rumored lost to time, Otto has survived and remains in remarkable condition, with evidence of production use, professional studio restoration to the face, and provenance from Jerry Zucker’s personal collection. He will be available in an upcoming Heritage Auctions event, accompanied by a COA.
