OSTRICH | Largest EYES of any Land Vertebrate + 10 more Delightful Facts
The common ostrich or ostrich (Struthio camelus) a species of flightless bird native to certain large areas of Africa, and belongs to the Ratite order of birds. Ratite birds have a flat breastbone without a keel, which makes them unable to fly and includes the ostrich, rhea, emu, cassowary, and kiwi birds.
1. Their eyes are said to be the largest of any land vertebrate – 50 mm (2 in) in diameter – helping them to see predators at a great distance. Their eye is also bigger than its brain!
2. The long neck and legs keep their head up to 2.8 m (9 ft 2 in) above the ground.
3. The common ostrich is the largest and heaviest living bird. Males stand 2.1 to 2.75 m (6 ft 11 in to 9 ft 0 in) tall and weigh 100 to 130 kilograms (220–290 lb), whereas females are about 1.75 to 1.9 m (5 ft 9 in to 6 ft 3 in) tall and weigh 90 to 120 kilograms (200–260 lb).
4. An ostrich can reach a speed of 70kmh (43.2 mph). This is not only the fastest land speed of any bird, and the fastest of any two-legged creature, but also faster than most birds can fly. When running at full tilt, it takes strides of up to 16 feet!
5. This brilliant bird’s strong legs don’t only carry the ostrich where it wants to go – they’re super effective when it comes to self-defense. If an ostrich is cornered by a hungry predator, such as a lion, cheetah, leopard or hyena, it will kick with a force powerful enough to kill! Each two-toed foot is armed with a 4 inch (10cm) sharp claw!
6. The ostrich is the only didactyl species, (meaning that it only has two toes for foot), since all the other birds have at least three or four toes. Having two toes helps ostriches running faster.
7. During breeding season, the alpha male makes a nest in the ground and attempts to attract females by dancing! His impressive moves include dropping to the ground, shaking his wings and tail, and swaying his head and neck from side to side.
8. They have the largest eggs of any bird. When laying eggs all of the group's hens place their eggs in the dominant hen's nest—though her own are given the prominent center place. The dominant hen and male take turns incubating the giant eggs, each one of which weighs as much as 3 pounds!
9. While a group of ostriches is most commonly called a flock, it's sometimes referred to as a pride, troop or even a wobble of ostriches!
10. Ostriches have three stomachs and, unlike all other living birds, the ostrich secrets urine separately from feces.
11. An adult ostrich can have one kilogram of stones inside its stomach!
