Spain's Orthodox plays a curious hybrid of hypnotic drone-doom, bass-driven bop jazz, and liturgical chant informed by the folklore of their native land. In "Amanecer en puerta oscura" (their second album) they sound completely unlike any other metal band, equally influenced by Mingus, Morricone, Earth and the Melvins. This strange and slowly unfolding flower rewards careful and repeated listening.
