![How to make the TRIBAR in Origami!πΊ 3-D IMPOSSIBLE TRIANGLE (Penrose Triangle)
[Low Intermediate] DIY Impossible Triangle How to make the TRIBAR in Origami!πΊ Penrose Triangle Optical Illusion. No tape or glue!...and no welding required!π This model was inspired by a video I saw by Henry Segerman showing a 3D printed version of this tribar illusion triangle, and then in my up next feed I was shown Hassan Abu-Izmeros viral welding TRIBAR which I was surprised to see had 8-million views in 1 month! Admittedly, THAT is what inspired me to try to design one out of origami.
TIPS for getting the optical illusion work. The gimmick needs to line up perfectly with the first bar and adjacent second bar and you probably will need to close one eye in order to be able to successfully view the optical illusion. This is because two eyes viewing would be in two places so it would be impossible to get it perfectly lined up from both places at the same time. If the gimmick is to long, you have two choices: you can shorten it by folding more off the tip or you can just view the model at a farther distance. Although I didnt show it in the video or thumbnail, I recommend trying to slightly narrow the gimmick flap with a tapered valley fold on its bottom edge, because as it is, you can kind of see in the thumbnail, where the blue bar and green bar come together, the gimmicks face looks unrealistically wide.
While it would be theoretically possible to make this model from one long rectangular sheet of paper, the difficulty in making the right-angle turns cleanly would make it a headache to fold and an even bigger headache to teach! So, instead, I opted for this modular approach. Im happy with simple bars and connector units I designed here, and I think this has potential to be applied to making a host of other geometric shapes, especially if I can figure out how to make tri-vertex and quadra-vertex connector pieces (if one of you doesnt beat me to it! π).
I did a little investigation to try to figure out the origin of this solution to how to make a 3D Penrose Triangle in real life and the oldest video I found on YouTube was uploaded by Michael42er 5 years ago, but he cites an older now defunct Japanese blog called Ikemath as to where he got his blueprint from. As for the original Penrose Triangle, It turns out that it was not first discovered by Roger Penrose in the 1950s but instead by Swedish graphic artist Oscar ReutersvΓ€rd in 1934 (according to Wikipedia), but in my opinion Penrose Triangle or Tribar has a better ring to it, than ReutersvΓ€rd Triangle.
This origami model is not that difficult to fold, but you literally need to have a very particular point of view in order to see the illusion!π

![Twisty Triangles π Flexi Square π§ Modular Origami
[Low Intermediate] How to fold the Twisty Triangles Flexi Square, a transforming lattice of swiveling triangles attached to each other using pure origami locks (no tape or glue). First, I show how to make a mini Twisty Triangles Flexi Square consisting of 4 triangles and then how to make the full 16-triangle Flexi Square. This is a modular origami tessellation because theoretically it could be repeated infinitely; Hopefully you can see how you could attach four 16-triangle Flexi Squares to form a Mega 64-triangle Twisty Triangles Flexi Square!
This model evolved out of my unsuccessful attempt to make origami fireworks out of origami right triangles during a Zoom tutoring session with Cliff Landesman, who is working on illustrating the building blocks of calculus using hinged and unhinged origami structures, and has booked me for several Zoom sessions as an origami consultant. The previous session with Cliff resulted in our creation of an origami construction of the Haberdasher Dissection Puzzle, which you can fold here: https://youtu.be/s-n6FIfYncc. To book an origami tutoring session with me here is the link: https://calendly.com/jeremyshafer.
If you like this model, youll probably also like my Dancing Dominos: https://youtu.be/o-KBqhZ-Dgc
One last idea... I havent tried this but my idea is that for a more rigid model you could make 16 extra triangular boxes with no tabs and insert them into 16 triangular boxes of the finished Twisty Triangles Flexi Square.

In the original full length tutorial I also show in depth how to flick it and I show a few other surprises as well! One thing I didnt show, but you can probably figure out on your own, is that if you flick it upward at the correct angle, it will boomerang back to you! (similar to how when you throw a frisbee upward at about a 45-degree angle, itll come back to you.)

![How to Make a 6-Point Ninja Star that Flies Super Fast!
[Rather Easy] How to fold an Origami Six-Pointed Ninja Star that flies super fast using no tape or glue!
For this Ninja Star I collaborated with Robs World https://www.youtube.com/@RobsWorld whose idea it was for us to try to design a new 6-Pointed Ninja Star together. We explored several different approaches during our 2-hour Zoom session and Rob and I are teaching different ninja stars. For Robs tutorial here is the link: https://youtu.be/CsUdArR9yBE
Folded from 6 squares of paper, this model has much narrower and longer points than the traditional 4-pointed Ninja Star, and the six modules used to make it are folded using a very simple, streamlined folding sequence.
If you would like to collaborate with me to design a new model you can book a private origami Zoom tutoring session here: www.calendly.com/jeremyshafer
