Every two years, orchestra@uwaterloo holds a Concerto and Aria Competition that is open to University of Waterloo students and recent graduates, and is judged by a panel of professional musicians. Winners perform as soloists with the orchestra in a public concert.
The winner of the 2023 competition was Catherine He, a pianist who is studying Computer Science at the University of Waterloo. She performed Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 in E Minor, opus 11 at the Fall 2023 end of term concert. The judges described her performance as an "absolutely flawless and poignant" performance of Chopin Concerto #1.
The second piece of the concert is Schumann’s Symphony No. 3 in E Flat major, also known as the Rhenish.
The orchestra@uwaterloo is a 60 member ensemble open to students, staff, faculty and alumni. It can be taken for credit or as an extracurricular activity. It is directed by Dan Warren, a well-known local trumpeter, conductor, and arranger.
On behalf of the orchestra@uwaterloo, the Department of Music at Conrad Grebel University College gratefully acknowledges Professor David Taylor, whose ongoing support of the orchestra and generous endowment have made the biennial Concerto and Aria Competition possible.
