Few styling details say Foxbody Mustang GT quite like the iconic louvered tail lights.
Known throughout the Mustang community as the “cheese grater” tail lights, the body color louvered design became one of the defining visual elements of the 1987 to 1993 Mustang GT. Love them or hate them, they’re unmistakably Foxbody, and we wouldn’t want to change that.
That’s why ORACLE Lighting took a different approach with our latest Classic Vehicle Lighting project.
Introducing the ORACLE Lighting 1987 to 1993 Mustang GT Dynamic Sequential LED Tail Light Conversion Kit, an all new LED system designed specifically around the GT’s factory louvered tail lights.
Instead of replacing one of the Mustang GT’s most recognizable styling features, we’ve engineered modern LED technology to make it even better.
Designed Around the Iconic GT Louvers
The GT tail lights presented an interesting opportunity for our engineering team. Rather than simply placing a large LED array behind the factory lens, we designed the LED layout specifically around the shape and position of the factory louvers.
Each group of LEDs is carefully aligned with the openings in the GT’s cheese grater tail lights.
When illuminated, the individual sections shine through the louvers to create a distinctive segmented appearance that feels perfectly at home on a late 1980s or early 1990s Mustang.
The result is something that looks both retro and modern at the same time.
With the lights off, the Mustang retains the unmistakable factory GT appearance. Turn them on, and an entirely different personality comes to life.
A Five Second Startup Sequence You Have to See
The GT kit also introduces a new feature to our Foxbody lighting platform: a Dynamic Startup Sequence.
When the tail lights are activated, the individually controlled LED sections perform an animated sequence across the tail lights for approximately five seconds before settling into their normal running light function.
It’s dramatic without changing the exterior styling of the car, and it’s guaranteed to get attention at a cruise night, car show, or anytime you fire up the Mustang.
The animation also demonstrates what separates this system from conventional LED conversion kits. These aren’t simply groups of LEDs wired together to turn on and off. The system uses individually controlled LED sections, giving us precise control over how the light moves across the factory GT lens.
Full Dynamic Sequential Turn Signals
That same technology powers the kit’s dynamic sequential turn signals.
Instead of a basic three stage sequence, the individually controlled LEDs create a much smoother and more precise sweeping effect across the tail light.
Combined with the GT’s horizontal louvers, the sequence creates an especially distinctive appearance. Each illuminated section works with the factory cheese grater design, producing an animation that looks like it was created specifically for the car, because it was.
From Foxbody Mustangs to American muscle and classic JDM platforms, ORACLE is developing a new generation of vehicle specific lighting conversions designed around a simple philosophy:
Preserve what made the car iconic. Upgrade what technology can make better.
