OR Books is one year old this week. In the past twelve months we've turned the publishing world on its head with a new, more effective way of doing business: producing meticulously edited and beautifully designed books only as they are needed----in paper or e-book formats, promoting imaginatively on the internet, and selling direct to the customer. We've even eschewed doing business with the 3,000 lb. gorilla in the industry, the world's largest bookseller, Amazon.
But for all the innovation in the way we publish, it's what we publish that defines the OR Books project: intelligent, offbeat books ranging freely over
politics and culture with writing that combines elegance of expression and clarity of thought.
Since we started in October 2009, we've leveled our sights at the Republican right with Going Rouge, our New York Times bestseller on Sarah
Palin, and with Laura Flanders' biting survey At the Tea Party. We've published two vital books on the Middle East, by Norman Finkelstein and Moustafa Bayoumi; Douglas Rushkoff's rapier-like philippic on the hazards of the digital age, Program or Be Programmed; edgy and widely-acclaimed fiction by Gordon Lish, Eileen Myles and Lisa Dierbeck; the first book on the Gulf oil disaster, In Deep Water, by the NRDC's executive director, Peter Lehner; and Chris Lehmann's caustic satire about the super-privileged, Rich People Things.
