A slow loss of coolant noticed around 88,000 miles got me to lay the car up for a couple weeks to get as much done as I could. I love this car, and it's taken care of me through a lot. Purchased used (at around 60,000 miles) in 2016. 1999 Subaru Impreza L SedanThis was a difficult job compared to what I'm used to... but all of my practice work (mostly working on my pickup) put me in a confident enough position to try it out. Manually mounting 13 tires with Harbor Freight Tire Irons and Bead Breaker 16mmDJ 2023-02-07 | I had this bent rim on my subie which I didn't know how to deal with. So found a rim on a similar car at a junkyard and have been getting practice unmounting tires. My God does it take a lot of energy and know-how. I swear to God, the other videos I've seen made this look so easy. I wonder if it's difficult for small-size A/S passenger vehicle tires. Most of the tire mounting vids I've seen were for ATVs or larger vehicles like trucks. TBH this is very exciting, I've been meaning to order seasonal tires for some of the cars, but didn't like the idea of paying $40 every time I wanted to switch them out. Reviews:The Harbor Freight Bead Breaker with Swan Neck gets 3/5 stars because I needed to strap it down and get creative with a ratchet strap. The Harbor Freight 24" Tire Irons get 2.5/5 stars because they worked great except for the one that bent when I got a little too forceful with it.
22RE Power Steering Pump Brackets 16mmDJ 2022-10-08 | This is how the power steering pump is mounted in a late-model 22RE (I can't speak for the older variants). The donor engine for my truck was from a '92 WITHOUT the PS option. All that I really needed to do to adapt the pump setup into the donor Long Block was clear out the 4 threaded bolt holes in the aluminum head, and the 1 threaded hole in the block itself. When I first encountered the 3 hunks of metal needed to hook up the PS pump, I got confused by the single wishbone shaped bracket which supports the main one. It wasn't obvious what it does when wrestling around all the junk you're weaving around in the engine bay.

Glad I was able to find a used board preheater instead of ordering a brand new one from somewhere. Super stoked to be able to learn a new skill and also save money over buying brand new equipment! Honda D Series Failed Fuel Pressure Regulator 16mmDJ 2022-07-08 | Troubleshooting engine crank, no start. Years later, I think this was actually due to a failing relay (?) or something electrical to do with main relay circuit. It still exhibits this behavior. While trying to hunt the issue down, found this odd fuel-system pressure regulation behavior which I think was unrelated, but was good to get taken care of. notes from service history8/1/2020 ODO 210,000 Wondered about occasional difficult cold starts. Extended cold-start cranking. Battery tests OK. Haynes' book recommended checking fuel system pressure. Gauge borrowed from O’Reilly’s. Fuel pressure shoots immediately up to 40+ when key turned to “ON” from no fuel pressure. Pump OK? However, disconnecting the vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator reveals a very sluggish reaction in fuel system pressure. I think it needs a new Fuel Pressure Regulator. Ordered along with an oil filter and drain plug gasket.i miss this car so much. d-series honda (1995 del sol) forgot i'd made this video. here it is.
Macintosh SE Clock Battery Replacement 16mmDJ 2022-02-18 | I finally got up the courage to tackle replacing the old Varta Lithium clock battery that's been ticking away inside this beige box for 30+ years. I hear that I might be one of the lucky ones where it didn't self destruct-- leaking caustic juice all over the motherboard. I grabbed a generic battery holder from Vetco in Bellevue and shaved off little sections of the plastic to make it fit better butted up against the nearby IC's. The Worlds Okayest SUBARU EJ22 16mmDJ 2021-11-01 | The Beating Heart of my favorite car!I keep going back to my hour-long "timing belt, water pump and valve adjustment" video just to listen to my stout little guy's engine idle. Video link: youtu.be/OPZ8VnQlCUI This is a good example of a low mileage, well maintained ej22. Worst thing about it is cold morning piston slap, but that's normal for these engines. I just don't drive it hard for the first minute or so. Good practice with any car.I have so much love for this car. I think in many ways the first-gen Imprezas are "sleepers". Everything you'd expect to like about a 90's Japanese economy car as far as engineering, reliability, handling, comfort & features - plus great ground clearance and AWD. To me the sedan body-style looks a lot like the Toyota Camry "XV10" - so much so that sometimes I need to do a double-take when casually car-spotting out on the road. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Camry_(XV10) This thing turned me into an evangelist of the Subaru drivetrain. Where I live you can get an Impreza for about the same cost as a Corolla -which these days even get similar MPG- and it'll come with Symmetrical AWD, a smooth boxer engine with a lower center of gravity, arguably better handling. Hell, they probably even come with cruise control as standard these days (funny joke). I'm very glad Subaru are still doing their thing.

It's hard to see in this video - I think due to the lack of perceivable depth - but in person approximately 20ft of the relatively straight path very clearly scoops off in the downhill direction. Remove Impreza Instrument Cluster (1st Gen) 16mmDJ 2017-02-01 | According to the service manual this can be done without lowering the steering wheel, but I couldn't figure it out. The big things to know are there are only two screws and two clips at the bottom of that shroud and three screws actually holding the gauge cluster in there. After that you may be able to rotate it out of there without taking the drivers side dash apart to lower the steering column. This applies to 1991-1999 imprezas and outback sports. Probably the bug eyed variety as well.

Whats Wrong With My 4EAT? 16mmDJ 2016-11-11 | Here's a little puzzle for those of you familiar with the ins-and-outs of automatic transmissions. I've got an odd moaning resonance that occurs when I'm in "Drive" and going about 30mph in this Impreza. Also there's a noticable clunk or hiccup from second into third that happens from time to time. I haven't noticed a consistent pattern to it, though. Unlike the resonance at 30, I don't think you can hear the clunk on the video. It's proven difficult to get anybody to take a serious look at the thing - mechanics are either not interested in looking into an automatic or tell me to get over myself. If it seems like I'm a bit high energy in this video it's because I was elated to be returning home for a three-day-weekend. Sorry about that - I hope it doesn't make the video any harder to follow. I shot this video in a bit of a daze - I'd hardly slept the previous night, had just come off eight hours of work and a serious caffeine high. Around Christmas time I picked this machine out of an e-waste bin near my workplace and brought it home with me to restore. Other than a pretty sizeable collection of pornography and a few family photos there was nothing of interest on the drive that was inside the laptop. I have zero interest in collecting other peoples' private data or personal information whatsoever. Since I picked up this machine I've upgraded the hard drive to a $30 SanDisk SSD. Still bottlenecked by the outdated sata interface, but who cares :) at some time in the future I'll probably upload an update.
DaVinci Resolve - Zoo Test 16mmDJ 2016-07-12 | Here's an edit of some old footage that I took at Woodland Park Zoo. I want to try using DaVinci Resolve now instead of Premiere Pro. Thought I'd give it a go. It didn't run too too well on an i7, 8gb, Samsung Evo 480gb SSD laptop. I didn't bother checking but I wouldn't be surprised if some thermal throttling was going on. I didn't catch too much footage, but I loved hanging out with the tigers. The shots I did use minimized the exposure to the goblins running around and screeching through the glass.I kinda fiddled with the colors so it may look like an idiot had a go at making an overcast seattle day look like hawaii 5-0
