Optomech Basics: Optical Base Mounting Orientation

Optical bases and other optomechanics may feature mounting slots which could be used from either side. However, many of these parts have a preferred mounting direction. The side that faces the optical table has material removed from the middle, known as a relief cut. The purpose of the relief cut is to reduce the amount of material in contact with the mounting surface to minimizes the effects of an irregular mounting surface, such as the base flexing or rocking on the table.

$What Is Snells Law? | Optics Explained When a ray of light is incident at a boundary, the light ray bends, or refracts to a specific angle. This interaction is the basis of Snells Law and forms the foundation of controlling light with transmissive optics. The angle a ray of light refracts is not only dependent on its angle of incidence with respect to the normal of the boundarys surface, but also based on the index of refraction of each material at the boundary. The sample principle applies to any plane in space, where two materials of the same refractive index result in the ray continuing in the same direction as its existing path. By combining multiple surfaces and boundaries, Snells Law is calculated at each surface and allows manipulating the path of light. Two parallel surfaces, like a window, result in a beam displacement when at non-zero angles of incidence. Two non-parallel surfaces form a wedged prism, which steer light rays to new angles.
