The Optoma UHZ50 offers a good entry point to laser-powered home entertainment DLP projection with a performance that gives you decent image quality for SDR movies, sports and gaming. It is a little weak when it comes to HDR, but no DLP projector at this price point will give you contrast, colour, or dynamic range that can create a convincing HDR image; however, there is a perceivable brightness difference compared to SDR content. This is not a projector for critical home cinema movie viewing as blacks are grey and there is a lack of contrast and crushed blacks, but it doesnt pretend to be anything other than a fun, useful all-rounder for casual gaming, sports and movies. Overall, with excellent input lag for gaming, and a decently bright image for most white-coloured rooms, thanks to the use of a laser light source and the portability of a projector, this perfectly fits the home entertainment branding and provides a good all-round performance.

Laser light source for instant on/off and lifespan
Good value for money as an all-round big screen projector
Colour and greyscale are good with SDR content out of the box
Can be used with a wide variety of content types
Looks bright, sharp and vivid in the right conditions
Good input lag for SDR gaming on a big screen
The potential of PC gaming at 1080/240hz

3D, if thats still your thing

*The not so good*
Lacks real contrast
Weak black levels and crushed blacks
Not an HDR projector or for critical movie viewing
Video processing has slight issues with upscaling, motion and colour gradations
Streaming quality and app support is poor
Speakers sound thin and should only be used in emergencies
Pricey when compared to the recent competition

As it stands, it is the only speaker of this type that the company intends to make and it represents a significant increase in cost over the AE520 which has been the range topper so far. It even gains a name instead of a number; the Roman name for what is now Cirencester near where Acoustic Energy is based. This increase in cost brings with it a significant increase in expectations too. A six-grand speaker is realistically the start of what can be described as the high-end. It represents an investment that requires thought and no little bravery and with that comes a tendency to be more risk-averse. Its all very well telling somebody else to try an all-new arrival but when it comes to your hard-earned, youre probably going with the known quantities. For the Corinium to be in with a shout of winning you over it needs to be very good indeed. It also needs to meet a challenge more specific to Acoustic Energy. This is a company with a formidable reputation for small speakers over and above anything else. The Corinium is actually fractionally shorter than the AE520 but it is by most judgements a large speaker.
