To celebrate the release of "Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth" earlier this week, I made a short collection of covers. This is a full instrumental cover of "Oppressed People", which is the music that plays in the slums of Midgar and some of the other towns throughout the game. It was inspired by some of my favorite Reggae (and Reggae adjacent) bands of the 70's - 80's like Steel Pulse, Aswad, and the Police, which you can check out here:

Final Fantasy VII[a] is a 1997 role-playing video game developed by Square for the PlayStation console and the seventh main installment in the Final Fantasy series. Square published the game in Japan, and it was released in other regions by Sony Computer Entertainment, becoming the first game in the main series to have a PAL release. The game's story follows Cloud Strife, a mercenary who joins an eco-terrorist organization to stop a world-controlling megacorporation from using the planet's life essence as an energy source. Events send Cloud and his allies in pursuit of Sephiroth, a superhuman who seeks to wound the planet and harness its healing power to be reborn as a god. During their journey, Cloud bonds with his party members, including Aerith Gainsborough, who holds the secret to saving their world.Development began in 1994, originally for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. After delays and technical difficulties from experimenting with several platforms, most notably the Nintendo 64, Square moved production to the PlayStation, largely due to the advantages of the CD-ROM format. Veteran Final Fantasy staff returned, including series creator and producer Hironobu Sakaguchi, director Yoshinori Kitase, and composer Nobuo Uematsu. The title was the first in the series to use full motion video and 3D computer graphics, featuring 3D character models superimposed over 2D pre-rendered backgrounds. Although the gameplay remained mostly unchanged from previous entries, Final Fantasy VII introduced more widespread science fiction elements and a more realistic presentation. The combined development and marketing budget cost around US$80 million.Final Fantasy VII received widespread commercial and critical success and remains widely regarded as a landmark title, and it is regarded as one of the most influential and greatest video games ever made. The title won numerous Game of the Year awards and was acknowledged for boosting the sales of the PlayStation and popularizing Japanese role-playing games worldwide. Critics praised its graphics, gameplay, story, and music, which is considered to be one of the best video game soundtracks of all time. Although some criticism was directed towards the original English localization, its success has led to enhanced ports on various platforms, a multimedia subseries called the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, and a high-definition remake trilogy currently comprising Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020), and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (2024).

Mega Man 2 is an action game developed and published by Capcom for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It was released in Japan in 1988 and in North America and PAL regions the following years. Mega Man 2 continues Mega Mans battle against the evil Dr. Wily and his rogue robots. It introduced graphical and gameplay changes, many of which became series staples.
Although sales for the original Mega Man were unimpressive, Capcom allowed the team to create a sequel. They worked concurrently on other Capcom projects, using their free time to develop the game, using unused content from the first game. Takashi Tateishi composed the soundtrack, with Yoshihiro Sakaguchi serving as a sound programmer.
Mega Man 2 is the second best selling Mega Man game, with more than 1.51 million copies sold. Critics praised its audio, visuals and gameplay as an improvement over the first game. Many publications rank Mega Man 2 as the best game in the series and one of the greatest video games of all time. The games soundtrack has been considered one of the greatest video game soundtracks of all time. It has been featured in game compilations, including Mega Man Legacy Collection for Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation 4, Windows, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, rereleased on mobile phones, and become a part of console emulation services. Mega Man 3 was released in 1990.

![Starlight Zone [70s Disco Cover]
This is a video game music cover of Starlight Zone from Sonic The Hedgehog for Sega Genesis. The arrangement features flute and vocoder, and explores what it would have been like if a group of musicians showed up to a studio in the 1970s to record the track.

![Final Fantasy I: Prelude [Synth Cover]
This is a cover of Nobuo Uematsus Prelude from the original Final Fantasy game for the NES. It was recorded with a Korg DS-8 synthesizer. The Korg DS-8 has an interesting story...
In the 1970s Yamaha began developing a type of synthesis known as Frequency Modulation (or FM for short). They released the GS-1, and later the more famous DX-7 in the early 1980s which made use of the new technology. Since Yamaha held the patent for FM synthesis, Korg had to license it from them to develop the DS-8, which was released in 1987. The DS-8 is sort of a stripped down version of the DX-7, but has its own character and charm. Since Final Fantasy was released in 1987 in Japan, I thought it would be fitting to record this classic piece of music with an actual DS-8.

![Sinfonia No.9 in F Minor BWV #795 [8bit Cover]
The ninth of Bachs 15 Sinfonias (three part inventions) arranged for FamiTracker.
I took a different approach with this project than I did with the Two Part Inventions. Since latter is composed of only two voices, I used the empty channels in the FamiTracker to simulate reverb and delay effects to give the pieces a sense of depth, space, and life. I also kept them in mono, so they were generally a more pure representation of the NES hardware.
Since the Sinfonias introduce a third voice, I decided that I would do most of the sound design inside FamiTracker and export the stems to process inside Ableton Live. The result is less pure to the Chip Tune ethos, but I think service the music in a deeper way. The use of stereo mixing allows for the 3 parts to be spread out across the stereo field, giving the piece a wider sense of perspective - and the use of more conventional reverb and delay effects puts it in more of a real world environment.
As for the pieces themselves, I was less familiar with the Sinfonias than I was the Two Part Inventions. I also didnt do as much consulting of existing recordings for reference. Instead I tried to rely more on my own decisions about tempo, phrasing, and articulations so the interpretations may be less conventional.

This Invention gives off some pretty strong Jesu, Joy of Mans Desiring vibes - only its an Allegro tempo. Nevertheless, its a 0:44 second romp that is guaranteed to put you in a better mood.
