Hi there, and thanks for joining today. As a leader you are likely just beset with a ton of things that you need to accomplish. You really need to be “nose down” in it getting things across the finish line. But one area you don’t want to trap yourself in is being caught behind your desk or being in your office for every second of every day. That is literally putting a barrier between your employees and your operation, and yourself. So you need to get out. The reason is that if you aren’t out in the operation, you’re missing out on the little things in engaging your employees that create relationships. How their kids are doing, what happened over the weekend. Those are the things that are formative to a relationship with your team and make you more accessible to them so that they will bring things to you when they come across problems. Second of all, if you are only waiting for people to bring you problems from the operation, you are missing out on all of the big ones that are out there. You are missing out on the big opportunities that are out there. You are missing out on the things that aren’t going the way you thought they were going, because you’re not out there looking and checking on the procedures that you put in place. You need to get out into the operation. Now this doesn’t take a ton of time. You can set little reminders for yourself when you have 10 minutes in a day to go ahead and make the rounds. It’s called managing by walking around. Old concept from way back in the 50’s and 60’s. But 10 minutes to just walk around. Another good trick, is that meeting that gets out 10 or 15 minutes before it was scheduled to end, go ahead and make the rounds with your people and with your operation. I think if you do this over the course of the next week you will notice several things, several important things, that you need to address. So I think you’ll find very quickly that this is something you need to put on your plate on a regular basis. Thanks, have a good one.
