Happened to be working near a lake I don't normally visit, about an hour from where I live. The lake and location aren't important since this was just a one shot deal and I probably won't be back there, at least not to this exact spot.

No claims, no mirage to analyze, just a whole lot of big waves. Something a little different for content on my channel, since I've been pretty focused on the 18.6 km point at the ferry for my recent observations and videos, and that's probably not going to change anytime soon.

$Hand Drawn Refraction pt. 4 - Inferior Mirage$ $An Intricate Display of Bendy Light (20 minutes of raw mirage footage) From observation #4, March 22, 2023. Shelter Bay Ferry (again). As much as I love time lapse, sometimes the real-time refraction effects are good enough that they dont need to be sped up to show the dramatic changes. I picked one 20 minute segment out of over 6 hours of recording on this day, to present raw and without any context, comparison, analysis or music. Hopefully, it is interesting enough on its own. If enough people like this Ill start doing the same for each observation. This was after after a long period of strong inferior mirage, but a somewhat unique transition where the higher areas seemed to stretch before the entire water surface and land became visible. After this point, refraction went kind of crazy (again) and I captured a ton of good footage from 3 cameras. Even though this was similar effects as my last 2 observations, there is always something unique and interesting about each day, and more to learn (and to try to remember), as long as I can stay long enough to capture it. Camera had a few issues. Theres some strong but gradual vertical drift which I like to blame on the tripod, but since there was no wind whatsoever and very strong local refraction, Im not so sure. I was away from the camera the entire time too. Why did it move and reset back gradually like that? Either way, its a poor segment to do any real analysis on, but still worth looking at closer. Also, it had trouble focusing a few times and I realized after that the motion stabilizer was on, not full but on basic. I try to keep it off for tripod recording. $10 Ferry Passes Swanalyzed (From Test #4) More from 12 km point observation #7. Using the second camera as an angular size and height reference, I was able to fairly accurately compare 10 different ferry passes over a 6 hour observation. For this video I am only comparing the physical (geometric) globe model, although the flat refraction requirements are shown (flat ray radius). Since we can calculate the geometric globe horizon location and place it within the image, we can compare both the apparent horizon and the apparent height of the 11 meter point on the ferry vs. the geometric globe horizon calculation. This analysis being fair relies on a few imprecise measurements that may introduce mild inaccuracies to the results. Im working on a video that will show how I came up with these numbers, and how I can double check everything again now and/or next season. These first tests were mostly to see what kind of useful data can be gathered using the two camera setup. Improvements to accuracy and presentation of the results will come with future tests and analysis.$ $Paddlin on the Edge Super strong upward refraction day causing much more obstruction than an actual globe would, even from many meters above water and continuing after the air temperature warmed above the water temperature. Warm lake water after an unusually cool evening produced a very strong and close inferior mirage early in the morning. This was another fairly boring observation with little change, even when the wind picked up. I did my best with this short segment of an otherwise uneventful 4 hour morning observation. Camera was no more than 20 inches above very choppy water. Waterproof Canon camcorder - poor picture quality but excellent stability in the wind. I had it set up on a drift log near the stream mouth. Im also just finishing another video of the full time lapse from 4-5 meters. Trying to salvage some very shaky footage. More on this observation in future videos.
