Scientific research often depends on components built to extremely tight tolerances—far beyond what standard manufacturing processes can reliably deliver. Extremely tight tolerances mean parts are made with almost no margin for error, ensuring they perform exactly as required. Many experiments rely on custom parts or small batches, making precision manufacturing and inspection especially critical to the success of scientific research.
Jonathan works closely with machinists, scientists, and engineers to ensure the parts produced in Central Shops meet these exacting standards. Using advanced inspection tools such as coordinate measuring machines (CMM) and optical comparators, he verifies that every dimension and feature is precisely where it needs to be before components are delivered for use in experiments and facilities across the laboratory.
Jonathan’s work has contributed to major initiatives at Argonne, including the Advanced Photon Source (APS) Upgrade, where Central Shops manufactured and inspected precision components used in the facility’s new storage ring.
For Jonathan, the job is as much about teamwork and shared knowledge as it is about technology—working alongside experienced machinists, learning from mentors, and ensuring that every part meets the high standards required to support cutting-edge science.
