At what point did someone decide to mix Garfield with shooting aliens? When did that happen in the comic strip or the cartoons? I can’t understand why unless he hated the two Bill Murray movies.
The third Garfield game for the ST was a public domain release, I'm pretty sure that Jim Davis would not have allowed this. It was an Operation Wolf style shooter released in 1992 by David Brankin, which sees Aliens impersonating that orange cat. I really not sure why he made a shooter, maybe he doesn’t like Garfield, I personally like the comics and I used to watch the Garfield and Friends series from the early 90’s.
The game is a simple shooter where you use the mouse to kill all the enemies in the stage within the time limit. But without a light gun which the ST doesn’t have, you are forced to use the mouse and these types of games tend to struggle game play wise because of this.
It’s also very repetitive with some annoying and loud sound effects and the Terminator theme tends to repeat throughout. Normally I like the Terminator theme, but not on a constant repeat. It also doesn’t help that it is noticeable that the music stops and starts every time you fire your gun. US Gold’s Street Fighter 2 does exactly the same thing and it really bugs me when you notice it.
Graphically the game looks aright, with the sprites of Garfield being the best thing to look at. But there is very little animation and what’s there is somewhat choppy and the backdrops are dull. I’m not sure why the game requires an STE, it might be to have extra colours on screen, but it is debateable whether it was needed.
Operation Garfield is not a good game, just play Operation Wolf instead. I’m not sure who this is aimed at, it doesn’t satisfy Garfield fan and it’s so repetitive as a shooter that it will bore you before the 2nd level is complete.
