In 2011, the New Orleans-based opera singer Givonna Joseph and her daughter Aria Mason created OperaCréole with the goal of staging suppressed and forgotten works by 19th-century New Orleans composers of color. Through their performances, they celebrate Louisiana’s Creole language and culture, while keeping a vital heritage alive for new generation—and building a strong community of their own in the process.
