A prototype simulation of C. elegans undulatory thrust: two rows of contractile elastic mater with two 180-degree out-of-phase travelling sine waves giving degree of contraction to each block.

The "worm" is in shallow liquid and the sequence of muscle contractions result in net forward thrust. The lack of impermeable membranes (under development at the time the video was captured) results in some water particles being "trapped" inside the contractile elastic matter.

This demo was developed by Andrey Palyanov, Sergey Khayrulin and Mike Vella for the OpenWorm project at the OpenWorm meeting in Paris, July 2013.
