OpenAI just revived Codex (first launched in 2021) — now rebuilt to rival Claude Code in the coding agent wars ⚡️
Here’s what’s new:
• Full agentic system for end-to-end coding (IDE + CLI)
• New VS Code extension (also works with Cursor, Windsurf)
• CLI rebuilt with GPT-5 → adds image inputs for screenshot debugging, web search, to-do lists, approvals, and more
• Features like thought summarization, custom prompt libraries, scroll-wheel nav, and command queuing
• GitHub integration → tag @codex in PRs for auto-reviews & suggested fixes
• Unified sign-in across IDE, CLI, web, and mobile → one agent experience
• Message caps: 30–150 msgs / 5h for Plus/Team, 300–1,500 for Pro (yes, still annoying)
• Faster with async execution → better for complex multi-step projects
My take: A real contender against Claude Code. If you’re already deep in the ChatGPT/GPT ecosystem, this could fit right into your coding flow.
